Flat Stanley visits his Uncle Mark in Chicago and goes on adventures around the city. He sees famous landmarks like Wrigley Field and Soldier Field. He is surprised by how big Chicago is compared to Cincinnati. Flat Stanley also travels to San Francisco, seeing places like Chinatown and riding cable cars. He returns to Chicago and explores more of the city, seeing buildings, parks, and art before taking the train back home.
2. I traveled from
Cincinnati to
Chicago where
Uncle Mark lives.
I arrived a little
wet and faded
from my trip.
3. Uncle Mark let me
go on a bike from
his house to
downtown to see
some of the
sights.
4. First stop was at
Wrigley Field
where the
Chicago Cubs
play baseball.
Wrigley Field is
one of the oldest
MLB baseball
stadiums. It is
99 years old.
5. I couldn¡¯t believe
how big the city
was. Chicago is
the third largest
city in the United
States. The city
is about nine
times bigger
than Cincinnati.
6. Then we saw
Soldier Field where
the Chicago Bears
play football. The
stadium was empty
and quiet.
7. It was too cold to go
swimming but I
passed by a beach.
You can see Lake
Michigan which is
so big, it almost
looks like an ocean!
I bet summer is fun
here.
8. Navy Pier has a
huge Ferris
wheel. The
Ferris wheel
was invented in
Chicago in
1893.
9. I biked around
Soldier Field where
the Chicago Bears
play football. The
stadium was empty
and quiet.
10. That night, I slept
with Annie and
Maggie. I am glad
they didn¡¯t think I
was a toy and chew
me up. They were
warm and furry.
11. The next day, I got
up really early and
went to the airport
and got on a plane
to San Francisco,
California which is
over 2,000 miles
away!
12. San Francisco is
famous for
Chinatown, which is
a neighborhood
where a lot of
Chinese immigrants
live. Here is me in
front of the Dragon
Gate which is like a
big doorway into
neighborhood.
13. San Francisco is
very hilly and to help
people go up and
down the hills, the
city has cable cars
that are pulled up
tracks. People hop
on and off and hang
off the side.
14. San Francisco has a
beautiful city hall.
When I was there,
there was a parade
celebrating Asian
culture.
15. I hopped on one of
the floats and took a
ride! Can you spot
me on the float?
16. I got to see the
Transamerica
Pyramid which is the
tallest skyscraper in
San Francisco
17. Before I hopped on
a plane back to
Chicago, I got to see
the Bay Bridge.
This type of bridge
is called a
suspension bridge
where cables hold
up the road. The
blue bridge in
Cincinnati is also a
suspension bridge.
18. The next day, I was
back in Chicago. I
started my day by
going to the gym. I
lifted weights to
strengthen my
muscles and bones.
But the fun part of
going was rock
climbing on a giant
wall on the outside
of the building.
19. Instead of riding my
bike or using a car, I
took public
transportation. First
was a bus ride. The
guy next to me was
on his phone the
WHOLE time! That
took me to a train
which took me to the
city.
20. Downtown had a
bunch of buildings
and a river in the
middle of them all. I
was told that during
St. Patrick¡¯s day,
they dye the entire
river a bright green!
26. The Chicago Art
Museum as
huge lions in
front of it that
look like they
are protecting
the building.
27. This is the Willis
Tower. It is the
tallest building on
this side of the
world. It is 108
stories tall! The
antennas on the
very top change
color at night
depending on the
holiday.
28. I had to get back
on the train and
head back home.
The trains have
color names so
you know which
one to get on. I
had to take the
Brown Train.
29. I hopped off in one
of the
neighborhoods on
the way back to
Uncle Mark¡¯s
house. The
buildings are
colorful and all
different.
30. I tried to eat sushi
for the first time.
The thing that
looks like a flower
is raw salmon cut
up and arranged in
a pattern. I¡¯m not
sure I liked it very
much. I think I like
hot dogs and
hamburgers better.
31. My trip was over
and I needed to
get back to Jacob.
I hopped back in
the mailbox and
headed back to
Cincinnati. I had a
lot of fun. Uncle
Mark was happy
Jacob sent me to
visit.
