A.J. van Winkelhoff Dr. Arie Jan van Winkelhoff studied medical microbiology and graduated at the State University of Utrecht and the State University of Florida, Gainesville, USA. His PhD thesis was on the role of black-足pigmented Gram negative anaerobic bacteria in human oral infections. From 1982 till 2008 he was associated with the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam. He is currently professor in Medical and Oral Microbiology at the University Medical Centre Groningen, The Netherlands. He is visiting professor of the Department of Periodontology, Eastman Medical and Dental Hospital, University College of London. He is the director of a Clinical Oral Microbiology Service Laboratory. He is a lecturer in periodontal and implant microbiology. His research has been focused on the application of periodontal microbiology in diagnosis and treatment planning in periodontics and implant dentistry and the use of systemic antimicrobial therapies. Current research is involves the relationship between periodontal infections and non-足oral diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. He has published over 200 scientific papers and he is member of the editorial board of several international journals in periodontology, microbiology and implant dentistry.
