Around this time yesterday
I found myself with heels bouncing
Out of rhythm, with no beat.
I checked the time –
And the watch struck adventure.
Need one outfit fit for journey of indefinite length.
Battle scars preferred
Ripped sleeves
Scraped by rock
Threadbare knees
And stretched wool socks.
I learned that my eyes opened wider,
And could soak up the whole world.
Mud-caked ankles,
Sweat-soaked hair,
Darkened skin where once were scrapes.
Engrossed in the world, we don’t smile for the photographs.
When I was twelve, my neighbor said,
“Wanna explore the woods today?”
