This document provides an overview of the NGLI 1101 class, which teaches critical thinking and information literacy skills. Students will work in groups on discussion boards and VoiceThreads, and will partner with Wikipedia to create a 500-word article. The course requires group work, has weekly assignments, and students can earn up to 1000 cumulative points. Technical issues should first be reported to Blackboard Help.

Welcome to NGLI 1101 - Research in the Digital Age
2. Overview
NGLI 1101 was developed to teach you how to think
critically & find relevant information, as well as how to
evaluate and interpret the information you find.
This course goes beyond navigating SHSU-specific
resources (though we will cover this).
This section was built with a grant to aid us in
developing our skills and putting them into practice by
working with a team of editors at Wikipedia.
3. GroupWork
This is a requirement for all NGLI 1101 courses.
We will meet this requirement through:
VoiceThread
Discussion Boards
Peer Review & Comments on the TalkPage in the
Wikipedia course page
Part of being information literate is also being able to
communicate, which is what you are doing with these
discussion boards & VoiceThreads.
4. Wikipedia
We are partnering with Wikipedia to develop &
practice information literacy skills.
The end goal is to create a Wikipedia entry/article that
will be published in their space.
500 word minimum
Guidelines & rubric will be provided
We will complete training to use their space & create
content. Completed training will earn completion points.
Everything will be built towards during the units.

6. Q&A
Post your course questions to the Q&A section on the
left menu in the course (dont leave personal
information since this is visible to all).
Help each other with answers.
I will respond to Q&A within 24 hours M-F. Im not
available on weekends.

7. LateWork
All work is expected to be completed and is necessary
to move forward to the course goals.
Late work will be reduced by %10 each day it is late.
Exceptional circumstance may ariseemail me privately.
If you register late to class, you will have the
opportunity to receive full points by a certain due date
as determined based on your registration date. Email
me privately.
8. Grading
Everything is graded (except Q&A).
This helps you earn points in case you miss an
assignment or dont do as well as expected elsewhere.
Points are cumulative. You can earn up to 1000.
Extra credit is available.
You must complete regular credit work in the unit on
time.
EC is posted in the units where its available.
My goal is to have your grades posted within 72 hours
of the due date/time.
9. TechIssues
Contact Blackboard (Bb) Help.
Then email me IF Bb tells you to or if the issue
interrupts your due date/grade.
There must be a record with Bb and proof of the
technical error.
