I was born in Kansas and like so many American families, our dysfunction had my childhood split between Kansas and Missouri; mom and dad, then foster parents. My brother and I were taken in by my grandparents in Virginia in 1990 where I realized my love for learning. I graduated from Halifax County High in 1994, joined the marines and was discharged for medical reasons a year later. I worked 3rd shift at a conveineince store until classes began in the fall of 1995. I attended Mary Baldwin College and majored in Biology, double-minored in ministry and women's studies (I am a FEMINIST). I attended graduate school at University of Virginia, then taught at Mary Baldwin College and now
