Observation: when people say "I love you," they put the emphasis (both in sound and meaning, I think) on the word "love"-- and yet, if you actually love another person rather than loving the idea of love itself, you probably ought to say, by default: "I love *you*." Falling in love isn't actually much of a feat. Falling in love with (or "recognizing") another person-- a real, singular person-- is much harder to do.
