Monica Kowal has been an educator for nine years, teaching English language, literature, and composition at the middle school, high school, and college levels. Prior to teaching, she was a journalist for 12 years in New York City, working for Reuters and The Associated Press. She is a UNM alumna (English-Creative Writing, 鈥�93) and holds an MA in Journalism from New York University and an MS in Teaching from Fordham University. She is currently a doctoral candidate at New Mexico State University in the department of Curriculum and Instruction. Her dissertation research focuses on the institutionalization and sustainability of K-12 service-learning programs. She lives with her husband, daugh
