6. What SVOD players need to do to be successful:
1. Supply content in the local language
2. Provide locally-produced content
3. Produce original content
4. Demonstrate subscription fee sensitivity to each market
5. Take payments in local currency
6. Offer a means of payment other than credit card
7. Form local distribution partnerships with pay TV operators, retailers, ISPs, telcos and/or
mobile operators.
7. Rise of the competitors
• Amazon Prime Video extended to 200 countries in late 2016
• Showmax extended to 36 African countries in May 2016 – and is also in Poland
• Iflix targets emerging markets. It has extended to 23 countries. Five African countries
added in June – more to come. Middle East distribution deal with mobile operator Zain.
Base in South East Asia.
• Claro and Movistar pan-regional in Latin America.
