The Von Thunen model proposes concentric zones of agricultural land use around a central city. Dairy farming and intensive agriculture occur in the innermost ring due to the need to quickly transport perishable goods to market. Timber production is next as wood is heavy. Grain fields are further out as grains are lighter. Ranching is in the outermost ring as animals are self-transporting. The model aims to balance transportation costs and land costs to maximize agricultural profits. Though simplified, the model still provides insights into the relationship between land use and distance to market.
