Born in Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada, I grew up near Niagara Falls. In 1971, I moved to Brea, California where I studied physics at Fullerton College while working as a machinist and, later, a truck driver. Setting my sights on a career in film, I quit my trucking job in 1978 and raised money from a consortium of local dentists to produce a 35mm short film.
My effects-laden short film led to work on Roger Corman’s BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS (1980), on which I served as production designer, matte artist and visual effects DP. I was soon able to parlay this experience into a stint as second unit director on Corman’s next sci-fi thriller, GALAXY OF TERROR(1981).
