David Hockney is an English artist born in 1937 who works in painting, printmaking, photography, and set design. He was an important figure in the pop art movement of the 1960s. Throughout his career, Hockney has painted portraits of friends and family, capturing their likenesses. In the 1980s, he began creating photo collages called "joiners" by combining multiple photographs. The National Portrait Gallery in London held a major retrospective of Hockney's work, including 150 paintings, drawings, prints, and photo collages spanning nearly 50 years, from early self-portraits to works completed in 2005.
