This document provides an introduction to project management. It defines a project as having goals, a finite lifespan, and defined activities. Project management is then defined as applying knowledge and skills to execute projects effectively and efficiently to help organizations achieve business goals. The main goal of project management is to deliver a project within defined constraints of time, cost, and scope. Finally, the document outlines the Project Management Framework established by the Project Management Institute, which defines the key knowledge areas and processes involved in project management.
Introducing the Portfolio Management SIG, APM Presents 2016
APM Presents..... Project Management in practice
APM Portfolio Management SIG
Thursday 17th March 2016
presented by Steve Leary
This document outlines key points about modern project management:
- It describes the importance of project management in society and organizations, and in executing strategy.
- It explains that projects are multi-disciplinary, non-routine efforts with defined time/budget constraints to meet customer needs.
- It discusses what differentiates projects from routine work, and how programs relate to multiple coordinated projects targeting a common goal.
- It describes the role of a project manager in leading temporary and independent project teams to success.
The document discusses the importance of portfolio management in achieving organizational success. It notes that effective portfolio management provides strategic alignment, balance across projects, risk management, aligned capabilities, and capacity for change. This allows organizations to complete more projects on time and on budget, realize benefits from initiatives, and make better business decisions. Research cited shows that organizations with higher portfolio management capability outperform peers in share price growth and meeting goals. Industries differ in their maturity of portfolio processes, with some demonstrating good practices around sponsorship, strategy linkage, and integrated people, process and technology.
Sustainability in the Agri-Food Context (AgroEcology course lecture)Nick Betts
?
This document provides an overview of sustainability in the agri-food context. It discusses the origins and evolution of sustainability concepts from meeting basic needs to current focus on environmental, social and economic factors. Key contributors to sustainability thinking are highlighted like Adam Smith, Peter Drucker, and Gro Harlem Brundtland. Components of sustainability like soil quality, economic viability and social responsibility are examined. Measuring sustainability is also addressed through developing SMART goals and key performance indicators. The document emphasizes that sustainability requires a systems thinking approach.
Farm Smart: optimizing woodlot through various maple syrup modelsNick Betts
?
This document proposes diversifying a 1,000 acre woodlot farm in Ontario with maple syrup production, beef cattle, and sheep to increase sustainability and profitability. It suggests implementing agroforestry practices like rotational grazing and bale grazing with access to shelter in the woodlot. Three maple syrup production options are considered: leasing land, tapping trees on leased land, and bulk syrup production. Calculations show this diversified system could generate over $46,000 in gross margin annually with 1.5 FTE labor. The next steps proposed are further understanding farm statistics, replication relevance in other locations, and market access for livestock processors.

This document discusses the potential for agricultural biomass in Ontario. It shows that the number of biomass producers and acreage dedicated to biomass crops has increased from 2005 to 2020. However, further development faces challenges as these are new crops that are not high-volume commodities. The document outlines Ontario's energy potential from biomass and opportunities for corporate sustainable sourcing. It proposes several projects for 2013-2014 to further develop the biomass value chain through partnerships, pyrolysis research, seed certification, environmental reporting, and engaging with national and European biomass industries.
This document discusses the potential for agricultural biomass in Ontario. It outlines various crops that can be grown for biomass including rhizome grasses like miscanthus and seeded grasses like switchgrass. These grasses can be used to produce pellets for heating homes and buildings. The document also examines existing biomass projects in Ontario and potential markets for biomass crops and products. It argues that developing agricultural biomass could provide rural energy and economic opportunities for Ontario.
This document summarizes a project exploring the agronomic feasibility and economic potential of growing biomass crops in Ontario. The project involves field trials of various biomass crops like miscanthus, switchgrass, and native grasses at multiple research sites. Data is being collected on establishment, yields, costs, and winter survival. Processing, aggregation, and potential end-uses are also being studied. Challenges identified include agronomic gaps, optimal processing and handling methods, and developing markets and policy support. Regional biomass tours and a preliminary report are planned to share initial findings.
The document outlines an agenda for a meeting on social media use. The agenda includes introductions, discussing expectations and goals, and an overview of various social media platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube and podcasts. It provides guidance on using each platform, including dosages, targets, and tips. The overall message is on integrating social media into a business's current communication strategy to build community and exposure through free marketing and targeted ads.

#2: Welcome to SAI Platform’s Spotlight implementation presentation. My name is Nick Betts and I’ll be your voiceover today. I’ve created this walkthrough to help provide clarity of how you can find greater value through Spotlight; I hope you’ll find it useful.
#3: By now you’re familiar with spotlight and you’ve entered your opportunities. You’ve also been using the tool and seen the other opportunities available. You’re ready to engage and are asking yourself, “what’s next?”
#4: Just like in the real world, our virtual spotlight offers multiple ways to meet other interesting people. Because Spotlight lets you know what interests others, the easiest way to connect with others who share your interests is to simply reach out to those people! This may be the most straight forward and direct way of engaging on an issue, but may not be the most efficient, particularly if the issue requires greater industry collaboration or more than a few members are interested in collaborating.
The second way of engaging others is by using SAI Platform as a facilitator. Think of us as your wingman as you explore the many fish in the sea.
#5: Unfortunately, we can’t spend all day playing matchmaker, so the Spotlight Steering Committee has developed some criteria for how we approach potential collaborations. We’ve but these into a convenient checklist. By having project partners work through this checklist, it enables empowerment of a clear vision, laser-focused objectives, transparent timeframes, and agreed-upon budgets. Once this checklist is completed and signed-off by participating companies, it is submitted to us at the secretariat to secure funding for the next step.
#6: Once completed, the checklist can be submitted to the appropriate Working Group Lead. For Crops, it’s either Jenny or myself. This signals the handover of the project from the catalysis phase, in the Spotlight Programme, to the development and deployment phases, through the Working Group.
#7: I hope you are as excited as we are about the great big ocean of possibilities available through Spotlight. Jenny and I are always happy to help you and your colleagues continue using the tool. Our contact details are at the bottom of this slide.
Life really is better together, and we hope Spotlight will help you find partners who share your interests and challenges.
