The video opens with close-up shots of a pair of heels and a wooden cross on the wall to set the scene and imply the main character is a Christian woman. Shots of the singer appear out of focus at first, representing the haziness of her thoughts. She is seen holding a bible with a 1940s picture of a soldier, indicating the time period. A low angle shot shows her looking worried outside a doorway, creating mystery. Flashbacks show her happily with a partner on a bike, contrasting with her current state. A close-up of her bare back in her bedroom feels intimate. Finally, she is seen heavily made up looking out a window, suggesting she is getting ready to go somewhere formal.

1. The video opens with a close up focusing on a pair of black heals before cutting to a
similar shot of a wooden cross situated on a wall. The handheld affect of the camera
lets the viewer feel as though we are looking at theses objects through the eyes of the
character. The focus on theses particular objects also help us to set the scene, we
assume from the personal feel of the slow camera movement that we are meant to be
identifying with a christen female character.
2. The camera cuts to an close of the singer which at first, appears to be out of focus.
From this shot type we are made to focus on her emotion as she performs. By having
her not make direct address our character seems to be lost in thought. The affect of
having this shot start out of focus could represent the haziness and confusion of the
character’s thoughts before showing that on the outside, that she makes herself
appear to be focused and in control.
3. There is an over the shoulder shot revealing a bible in Katy’s hand as she looks down
and takes out a 40s style picture of a young solider. This tells the audience when this
video has been set. The height of the angle creates a sombre atmosphere to this shot,
we are looking down on this picture and possibly reflecting, this matched the slow and
down beat tone of the non-diegetic music.
4. The camera cuts to a low angle long shot of Katy looking over her shoulder as she
displays the picture of the soldier. The low angle of the camera and it being situated in
a doorway makes the audience feel as though this is not something we should be
seeing. The worried facial expression of the singer as her eyes fixate on a point outside
of the shot suggests that’s she is doing something wrong, it also creates a sense of
mystery as the audience are unable to see what she is looking at.
5. The camera cross cuts from an extreme close up of the black and whit picture to a mid
two shot of the couple on a bike. The bright lighting here and the vibrancy of the
colours suggest that these are happy memories that the main character is reflecting on
as he is looking at the picture of the man. The two shot allows us to see that loving
and close relationship between the two characters.
6. We cut back to a shot of Katy in her bedroom. The close up of her back as Katy holds
herself allows this sense to feel very intimate. The amount of bare flesh and the nude
colour of the wall allows the shot to feel quite raw and natural allowing the audience
to feel as though we are connecting with Katy creating synthetic personalisation.
7. As we cut to a close up of Katy looking out of a window, we are able to see that she is
heavily made up showing that she is an extremely feminine character and leads us to
think that she might possibly be going somewhere formal.
