What are the most obvious
solutions for this problem? *
1. Build a training manual about it
2. Create a new course at uni that deals with these things
3. Use internships to give undergrads experience
4. Tell the grads to grow up - everyone has this problem,
you just need to deal with it.
5. Get the grads to see it as a challenge - show how well
they can handle being out of their comfort zone and how
quickly they learn.
6. Get the companies to be up-front with undergrads - this
will be a challenge for you and we're being deliberately
"survival of the fittest" about it - do you have what it
takes?
What can you add, remove or

Three selected ideas
Most Practical
Build a strong
undergrad/postgrad/employer
support group which focuses on the
things they don't teach you at uni.
I actually had a few ideas which link
closely with this one  probably a good
sign that this idea has legs. The
success would depend on the passion
of the organisers, but I see it being
driven by a steering group from all
three stakeholder groups, who have a
vision of supporting undergrads to
develop the skills and behaviours
which will make them into effective
employees  not just promising grads.
Most Disruptive
Let the grads set the culture
This sounds disruptive to the point of
being a recipe for disaster. But there
are definite aspects of a companys
culture which would benefit from
handing a lot more control to fresh
grads. For example, the Innovation
culture can get very stagnant, very
quickly. Also, new grads have just been
drilled with the importance of
Personal Brand and usually come
with a full tank of energy, so can
actually make very good culture role
models.
My Favourite
Make a Survivor-style TV show about
new grads in the workforce, to show
how hard it is.
I love this idea because it harnesses
the power of story-telling to build
empathy for the grads. Its not a 100%
serious idea, but it has elements
which could be used. I can see it
building up the grads own sense of
belonging to a tribe of people facing
the same issues. It could be used to
show how they learn and pass a
message on to companies about how
they could make things easier.
