Feeling is a response to thought, not external circumstances. Different people can think differently about the same situation, like an economic downturn which some see as depressing, challenging, or exciting. People with phobias feel fear from thoughts alone, like feeling scared of spiders even when none are present, as reactions are to thoughts in their heads rather than objective reality.
