Philip first started in the hotel business as a 16 year-old lad washing dishes at the Banchory Lodge, a small country house hotel on the banks of the River Dee in Aberdeenshire. He completed an HND in Hospitality Management at Robert Gordons University and went on to hold managerial positions in hotels in Maidstone, Bedford, Southampton and London, before joining Travel Inns where he was openings and general manager at the Glasgow and Edinburgh Travel Inns and then general manager at first the Gatwick Travel Inn and later the Portsmouth Marriott.
