Raanan Katz鈥檚 move to the United States from Israel in the early 1960s was fueled by dreams of becoming a professional NBA player. A respected outside shooter, Mr. Katz was a member of his country鈥檚 national team. Moving to America, he joined the Atlantic City Seagulls, an exhibition team that played against the Harlem Globetrotters.
Mr. Katz used the money he earned playing basketball as seed money for his real estate ventures, initially acquiring a small apartment building in Boston. A longtime Boston resident, he expanded his portfolio to include 2,000 apartment properties in the greater Boston area by the late 1970s.
