Richard studied trumpet at Birmingham School of Music where he won several competitions and prizes: Alfred Corfield Trumpet Prize, BMI Brass Recital Prize and the BMI Head of School's Prize. In 1985 he was awarded the Silver Medal of the Worshipful Company of Musicians and was made an Honorary Member of Birmingham Conservatoire in July 1998 (Hon BC) and an Honorary Fellow in June 2009.
He was the founder (in 1981) of the Cambrian Brass Quintet and (probably) made his final performance with the ensemble in Thailand at the Ayutthaya International Culture Festival 2000.
From 1984 to 1996 Richard worked as a professional trumpeter and was also in demand as a brass teacher and conductor.
