I moved here from the Midwest almost eight years ago, now. It goes by so fast. I'm still sweet, I'm still nice, I still say 'please' and I still gesture apologies to cabs for blocking their right turns. What's changed? I can edge my way out of a subway car during rush hour. I can make my way through a crowd and not constantly apologize. There are changes that New York forces from you, else you find yourself helpless and, more consequentially, immobile. Still, the tendency of New Yorkers to attempt to assert themselves as unique and beautiful undiscovered celebrities does clash with my Midwestern sensibilities of humility-bordering-on-shame, and I have come to define myself by what I am
