A Review by Regina D. Parks on the work
of Keith R. Wyche and Sonia Alleyne
Overall I really found the book to be
informative and useful in the delivery and
understanding of what is expected of the
minority employee aspiring to become an
executive.
I did take issue with one small point, the
requirement to be mobile in order to make it to
the top. After reading further into the book,
this concept was explained fully as to be more
of a requirement instead of a wish. Being
inflexible can destroy a career.
The book stressed the importance of
communication skills:
 Written
 Oral
 Implied
 Networking:
 Within the business unit
 Outside of the business unit
 Education: MBA
 Mentor
If you are fortunate enough to have this luxury, then
take full advantage of it.
 Operational and Sales Knowledge
This is imperative to show you can grow the
business and manage the finances of the business.
 Connections
Not just to get you in a great position but to keep
you there.
Being stagnate in the position you are currently
in or a particular mindset.
Not reaching out to fellow employees and
upper management.
Not pursuing higher education or additional
training through the company.
 Giving up!!!!!
Being mobile to the company can provide a
greater avenue for advancement as well as
allowing more people the chance to see and
feel your talents.
Dont pigeonhole yourself in an area which is
not conducive to advancement reach out and
network.
Most important reach beyond the stereotypes
speak and work at an executive level at all
times in every position.
Forging a new path always starts
out small and grows. Remember,
every river started as a creek.
