StormTrack is a novel algorithm for the identification, tracking and nowcasting of the thunderstorms which uses the Meteosat Second Generation as unique data source. It works in near realtime and provides the information with a high refresh rate (every 15 minutes). Actually it covers Europe, Africa, part of South America and Arabian Peninsula. This presentation, done at the Eumetsat Conference 2016, shows its validation over different European Regions using the lightnings as ground truth.]]>

The number of the extreme meteorological events has increased in the last few years and the trend should be the same for the next future. These events generally develop very quickly and on a small scale, nevertheless they may provoke several damages and affect also the human's safety. For these reasons it is very important to monitor and prevent these natural hazards by means of advanced techniques which must be able to: detect the event as soon as possible track the behaviour of the event predict the short term development of the event StormTrack is a novel multispectral algorithm for the detection, the tracking and the short term forecast of convective objects developed by Geo-K. The model is already operational and some web services based on its output are already available. Our work is aimed to show the results of the validation activity developed in the last year. The StormTrack validation involves the comparison with benchmarks like the Rapid Development Thunderstorms, developed by Meteo France, and the lightning activity over Europe and South Africa.]]>

https://cdn.slidesharecdn.com/profile-photo-MicheledeRosa1-48x48.jpg?cb=1495812246 During my working life, I had the chance to know what is the programming and what is the team management. I worked for civil (Air Traffic Control) and defense projects and the roles were from the programmer to the project manager. Moreover my research activities had opened my mind in order to fuse my computer science knowledge and my passion for the meteorology. I worked on the integration between the weather data, produced by the models I developed during PhD, and an open source augmented reality engine. Currently I'm involved on a project regarding the thunderstorms detection and tracking using Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) data, named Celltrack, and on a project about the rain estim... http://www.mondometeo.org https://cdn.slidesharecdn.com/ss_thumbnails/ayearofvalidationofthestormtrackalgorithmoverdifferenteuropeanregions-161001135951-thumbnail.jpg?width=320&height=320&fit=bounds slideshow/a-year-of-validation-of-the-storm-track-algorithm-over-different-european-regions/66626032 A year of validation o... https://cdn.slidesharecdn.com/ss_thumbnails/validationofdifferentnowcastingmodelsbasedonthemsg-150925084817-lva1-app6891-thumbnail.jpg?width=320&height=320&fit=bounds slideshow/validation-of-different-nowcasting-models-based-on-the-meteosat-second-generation-satellite-data/53185683 Validation of differen... https://cdn.slidesharecdn.com/ss_thumbnails/meteocast-140124064411-phpapp02-thumbnail.jpg?width=320&height=320&fit=bounds slideshow/meteo-cast/30385807 MeteoCAST: a nowcastin...
