A new phrase that has permeated our society is the phrase "Gone Viral". On social media, a meme image or a silly TikTok video about a cat running into a wall can gain tens of thousands of "views" in just a few days. That's going viral. This week we begin our sermon series entitled Viral: A study of Acts. Acts is the story of how the church, a rag tag group of 120 believers in Jesus became a thriving church of a million people within less than a century. In this opening message we will look at several important introductory topics concerning the title, date, authorship, and key theme of this important book. We will also consider how not to and then how to study the Book of Acts. We will conclude by looking at five key statements made in verses 3-5 of Acts 1, concluding with a call to do the hard work of waiting on God.]]>

Series Intro: Jesus was born into a world that was paganizing. The Herodians and Sadducees accommodated Rome's influence. The Pharisees tried to build a protective hedge of legalistic rules. It didn't work - they were losing the heart of the nation. God's people were becoming increasingly demoralized and godless. It was against this pessimistic backdrop that God sent His Son as a baby who came to redeem a weary world and give all its people valid reasons to rejoice. Sermon Intro: In Genesis 22 Abraham is faced with an impossible choice. The God he loves who miraculously provided a son for he and Sarah has now commanded him to sacrifice that son, Isaac. As Abraham and Isaac are climbing Mt. Moriah to sacrifice to the Lord, Isaac innocently says, we have wood and the means of starting a fire, but where’s the lamb? Abraham assures him that God would provide a lamb. As we move into the account of Jesus’ birth, we see that once again, God has provided a sacrificial lamb for His people. That lamb, Jesus had come to take away the sin of the world. However, this gift of salvation requires a choice. Have you accepted God’s sacrifice and made God’s lamb your Lord?]]>

Today's sermon on 1 John 5:6-12 takes note of the fact that John presents God's testimony concerning His Son using the legal metaphor of the agreement of witnesses. Pastor Steve describes this interchange as God v. Man where God asserts that His testimony is greater than the testimony of mankind. However, the witnesses are unlike anything we have seen in a courtroom drama. The witnesses that God calls are The Water, The Blood, and the Spirit - the three that testify concerning Christ and affirm that He is the Son of God.]]>

As we launch into John 5 we see that John restates the "3 tests" of the true believer for an important reason. In 1 John 4:7-21 John gives an extended treatment on the fact that God is love. Although this topic has been addressed several times, each time there is a new emphasis. In this text, John asserts that God is invisible. Jesus is the visible expression of God's love to us and we are called to visibly express Jesus' love to our brothers and sisters and to the world at large. Expressing love to others causes our love to mature... we are perfected in love. Failing to do so reveals that we have yet to truly embrace God's love.]]>

In this sermon we explore 1 John 4:1-6 where John exhorts believers to "test the spirits." At first, we might feel like we are missing the instruction manual. How do we test the spirits. However, as we observe John in action with a separatist group we see that the test is a test of whether a teacher has a proper theological understanding of the person of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the source of inspiration for those who affirm Jesus in His totality. Those who deny either his deity or humanity are inspired by the devil. The job of the true believer is to discern between good teachers and bad ones. This is not the exclusive domain of pastors and elders... it's our job!]]>

This sermon is a tag-team preaching event. Pastor Ryan will cover John 2:28-29. Pastor Steve will cover John 3:1-10. John makes some very strong statements suggesting that Christians do not sin. However, when we dig into the grammar of these verses it exposes the difference between occasional sinning, something we all do, and habitual sinning - something that God's Spirit protects the true believer from. Jesus redeems us from our sins and looses us from the chains that Satan seeks to bind us in - the chains of sin.]]>

In confronting the false religionists who had redefined Jesus, accepting Him as Messiah but rejecting Him and the Son of God, John uses the strongest terms. He refers to them as antichrists. In doing so he teaches us the critical importance of right doctrine. We cannot redefine Jesus and then claiming that in Him we have eternal life. To be in Jesus you must accept Him as He presents Himself, not as you want him to be. Our text in Jn. 2:18-27 explores important issues concerning truth and lies, a message sorely needed in the post-Christian 21st century.]]>

In 1 John 2:12-17, John makes two digressions from his main argument concerning the key "tests" for discerning true believers from false teachers. These digressions are not a distraction. John sees them as critically important. The first concerns the assurance he wants to extend to believers at all stages of spiritual development. The second digression is a warning not to "love this world." We will explore how John uses the word "world" in this text, as a means of referring to the world system that defies God and despises his commandments. Loving this world is antithetical to loving God!]]>

In our sermon this week we will see John take on a major shortcoming in the church today. There are many professing believers who believe that it's possible to love God and hate some of our Christian brothers and sisters. We don't typically call it hatred, but we run them down at every turn, fantasize about their downfall and thank God we are not like them. That's how haters behave. John reiterates Jesus' New Commandment calling us to love others especially fellow believers. Doing so presents the world with a powerful apologetical argument - Jesus changes lives, tearing out hatred and replacing it with love. John is very black and white. In 1 Jn. 2:9 he says, "Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness." In this sermon we will be challenged not to water down his words but accept them and seek God's grace to purge our hearts of hate.]]>

In this sermon from 1 John 2:1-6 we will explore several key aspects of the good news of Jesus. The first is that Jesus is our advocate. In the courtroom of heaven, Jesus has the ultimate standing and he pleads the case of His children before His righteous Father. Not only is he our advocate but he is also our atoning sacrifice. He doesn't only plead for use but He bled for us satisfying God's righteous wrath towards our sin. We will close with three ways in which we can discern whether we have truly surrendered our lives to Him.]]>

The First Epistle of John is a very practical book for today's world. How many of us have experienced painful church splits. The Apostle John was faced with the challenge of dealing with a break-away group that was trying to "shear his flock" by luring them into dangerous false beliefs. They "demoted Jesus" rejecting the Bible's clear teaching that Jesus was and is the Eternal Son of God come in human flesh. We are told that in the end times false prophets and false teachers will abound. As John deals with these schismatics, we will learn powerful lesson about the true gospel, a message concerning how we can be transformed and walk in the light and love of God.]]>

Lying. We know it's wrong but it is a sin we rely upon heavily. It keeps us out of awkward situations. Sometimes we even view it as a kindness, sparing people's fragile emotions with a "little white lie." However, God views lying very differently. He sees it as a dangerous sin that compromises our Christian witness and misrepresents Him. God cannot lie. He is all about truth, and as His children, we need to be truth-tellers as well. Like any bad habit, lying can be broken, but not without God's help. In this sermon, we will explore the Bible's definition of lying, explore God's clear prohibitions concerning lying and consider a few rare exceptions in the Bible where liars "seem to be" rewarded for their untruths. This sermon will conclude with a 4-part "Treatment Plan for being Set Free from Lying.]]>

The inspiration for this series was an exercise that we did together at the Good Friday service. Those attending were challenged to anonymously write down a sin that was a persistent problem in their life. We tabulated the results and created this series entitled "Set Free." During this series we will look at the seven top responses and explore how Jesus can set us free from these sins. This week we take on the first topic: Set Free from Pride. ]]>

Pastor Steve concludes this 2-week series on Heaven and Hell by exploring the longest treatment on Heaven in the Bible found in Revelation 21 and 22:1-5. We will deal with practical questions like, "Is Heaven a real place?" "Are the New Heaven and New Earth New or Remade?" and "Will heaven be boring?" There's a lot we need to know about our Eternal Home. Knowing our destiny makes it easier to survive the every day grind of life in a world that is increasingly hostile to faith in God. ]]>
