The Maldives has the highest prevalence of Thalassemia in the world: this disease affects almost 1/5 Maldivians, according to Mohamed's research. One out of every 120 newborn is born with Thalassemia, and Without regular blood transfusions, 85 percent of these children will die by the age of five, he explains.
