SDN and NFV—What can an NREN offer? /slideshow/11leinen/42811754 11-141217161813-conversion-gate02
Keynote to the Future Internet Forum in Athens in March 2014. Presents current opportunities and challenges of SDN for (national) research and education network operators. Outlines NREN's peculiar context between academic institutions, researchers, and vendors. Suggests to leverage the hype around SDN for setting up collaborative community fora, and to look for innovation potential at the "fringes" (as opposed to the mainstream) of the SDN wave. Closes by outlining a few issues with testbeds in general.]]>

Talk from the inaugural workshop of the Swiss SDN working group in October 2013. In the context of a green-field "cloud" infrastructure build, the talk looks at three areas where "SDN" techniques seem useful: To scale the internal network fabric across many racks; to realize a cost-effective high-bandwidth uplink connection to the Internet; to support "virtual private cloud" services using tunneling.]]>

https://cdn.slidesharecdn.com/profile-photo-simonleinen-48x48.jpg?cb=1542376225 I want to help enable the academic community to benefit from cloud computing on appropriate terms. This includes looking at "open cloud" technologies such as OpenStack or Ceph, studying legal and governance requirements of academic institutions as well as their strategic options, and understanding commercial and other offerings in the cloud space. Between 1995 and 2011, I performed design, implementation, and operational work on IP networks, participated in standardization activities in the IETF, and developed software in the network management and traffic accounting areas. It has been exciting and satisfying to watch the Internet grow from novelty to planetary infrastructure. https://simon.leinen.ch/ https://cdn.slidesharecdn.com/ss_thumbnails/into-the-cold-181116135153-thumbnail.jpg?width=320&height=320&fit=bounds slideshow/into-the-cold-object-storage-in-switchengines/123178245 Into the cold - Object... https://cdn.slidesharecdn.com/ss_thumbnails/sdn-150814195226-lva1-app6891-thumbnail.jpg?width=320&height=320&fit=bounds slideshow/softwaredefined-networking-51644912/51644912 Software-Defined Netwo... https://cdn.slidesharecdn.com/ss_thumbnails/11-141217161813-conversion-gate02-thumbnail.jpg?width=320&height=320&fit=bounds slideshow/11leinen/42811754 SDN and NFV—What can ...
