1. The document discusses a research study that aimed to understand what determines students' enjoyment of learning in lecture theaters through interviews with 25 students.
2. Students cited comfortable seating, adequate lighting and temperature, and the ability to sit with friends as factors that increased their enjoyment, while uncomfortable chairs and being alone decreased enjoyment.
3. Based on the findings, the researchers hypothesized that the compositional and sensual elements of the lecture theater, such as seating comfort and temperature, have the greatest impact on increasing students' enjoyment of attending lectures.
3. Lecture Theater (LT) as Technology The LT as a system Passive Learning Technological elements of a modern LT Audio & Visual Chairs Temperature Lighting Other students Teaching Learning
4. The Research Variables & Assumptions all lectures and lecture contents are equally interesting Focus on the LT as technology Framework to analyze Technology Four Emotional Threads: Compositional, Emotional, Spatio-Temporal, Sensual Motive and Hypothesis Motive : What determines the enjoyment of learning in lecture theatres. Hypothesis : Compositional and Sensual emotional threads increase enjoyment in attending lectures. Methodology Laddering not effective Exploratory Interview with random sample of NUS students 25 valuable respondents
5. Laddering example Investigator: Okay, please tell me something about your learning experience in Lecture theatres Participant : I enjoy going to LTs with my friends for lessons. Investigator: Why do you enjoy going with friends? Participant : Because they provide companionship and i wont feel so bored Investigator: Why dont you like feeling bored during lectures? Participant : Because very mundane to just keep jotting down notes and listening
6. Laddering example Investigator: What is so bad about feeling mundane in a lecture? Participant : The lecture can drone on and on and it gets very bad when you're alone Investigator: Why is it bad to be alone? Participant : Coz when am alone, there is one less person to take notes with me and when i miss out something, i can turn to no one for help unless e person sitting beside me looks friendly Investigator: Why is it important to ask for help from someone who looks friendly? Participant : An unfriendly person might not wanna lend me notes then i'll look very stupid asking
7. The Ladder Relationship between people in lectures is Important Good companionship is central to learning experience Avoid boredom from listening and taking notes Enjoy the company of others
8. Interview Questions My faculty Year of Study Please tell us your most favourite LT in the campus and why you like this LT so much. Please tell us your least favourite LT and why is it so undesirable
11. Remarks: Favorite LT Lt 11. Because it's huge, new and spacious. It is also bright and yet cosy :) LT12, because it appears central and accessible yet it is not very exposed. LT17, newly furnished. LT 25. There are significant number of power plugs as i need them to use my laptop LT27 - very large (ample choice of seating), comfortable seating (unlike LT25,33,34), easy access (few seconds away from Bus stop).
12. Opposing views on LT 11 It's too big. The writing tablets are also too big, which "eats" into your sitting space. | because of the openness and large capacity, it is easy to zone out Too Big and cold Because it's huge, new and spacious. It is also bright and yet cosy It's so big...you can just disappear among the masses and enter your own comfort zone. All of FASS's LT, tables & chairs are still in good quality just that sometimes the air con is too strong.
15. LT 26 Remarks The wooden chair is not comfortable at all. Very uncomfortable chair because it has old pull-down seats which are uncomfortable
16. Remarks: Other Least Favorite LT LT 11. It's too big. The writing tablets are also too big, which "eats" into your sitting space. LT 12. Small, cold and dark LT 13. dun really like the theater design LT 21. Very uncomfortable chair LT 25. seats are not comfortable at all. LT 26. The wooden chair is not comfortable at all.
17. Aftermath Observation LT 26 seems to be most problematic Some LTs had pretty mixed findings : LT 11 is pointed out as one of the most favourite LTs for some people, but yet there were others who found it too cold and big Limitations Our results and method of research would have varied greatly if we had interpreted learning experience in a different manner Enjoyable vs Educational learning In this case, Compositional and Sensual seem to be very important factors to users
18. Conclusion Hypothesis: Compositional and Sensual emotional threads increase enjoyment in attending lectures. Compositional Chairs Temperature Power plugs Emotional Design Air texture
19. Possible solutions Comfortable Chairs Reference Design ? Temperature control sensor Warm by default, incrementally lower as more students come in Revamp Old LTs with updated contemporary design Air Refresher Power points for personal digital learning devices
