The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

1. VLIV PRSTENU MOCI NA GLUMA
Argumentace výběru tématu:
Vzhledem k tomu, že se domnívám, že mnou zvolené téma by mělo být takové, v jakém se
skutečně vyznám, seznala jsem, že nemohu dostatečně odborně hovořit o ničem ze svého
dosavadního vysokoškolského studia, jelikož s jedinou výjimkou nebyly mé znalosti dosud prověřeny.
Za téma své práce jsem zvolila vliv Prstenu moci na Gluma(z universa Středozemě), jelikož
sice v událostech ve Středozemi hraje zásadní roli, nicméně informace o něm jsou spíše druhotné.
Mým původním záměrem bylo popsat Prsteny a jejich vliv obecněji, nicméně poté, co jsem
zjistila, že žádaný rozsah je 5 000 znaků, nikoli slov, musela jsem téma zásadně zúžit.
Částečně navzdory výše uvedenému lze tvrdit, že i toto téma zapadá do kontextu mého
studia, neboť bude-li mi to umožněno, hodlám si zapsat předmět CJBC515 Fantastická literatura.
Anotace:
Text pojednává o Jednom prstenu, nejmocnějším artefaktu ve Středozemi a o jeho vlivu na
stvoření nazývané Glum, ve které se právě vlivem Prstenu změnil obyčejný hobit.
Autorka, jež se již více než deset let relativně intenzivně zajímá o Středozem a další
fantastické světy, se snaží popsat Gluma jako oběť okolností, které nemohl ovlivnit a ukázat jej
z perspektivy duševně narušeného jedince.

1 Prsten
Jeden prsten, nazývaný také Vládnoucí, ukoval Sauron v utajení v ohních hory Orodruiny (Hory
osudu, Amon Amarth) zhruba v roce 1600 Druhého věku. Do tohoto prstenu vložil velkou část své
síly, proto mohl – s Prstenem na ruce - „vnímat všechno, co se stalo s pomocí menších prstenů, a
mohl vidět a ovládat samotné myšlenky těch, kteří je nosili“1.
Na první pohled je prsten obyčejný, hladký kroužek zlata. Po zahřátí se na něm však objeví nápis
„Ash nazg durbatulûk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatulûk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul.“2
Jedná se o úryvek z veršů o prstenech „Jeden prsten vládne všem, Jeden jim všem káže, Jeden
všechny přivede, do temnoty sváže“3. Prsten nejen ovládá ostatní prsteny, ovládá i svého nositele,
který se na něm stává závislejším, čím déle jej opatruje u sebe.

2. Vládnoucí prsten není možno zničit jinak, než jej roztavit buď v dračím ohni, nebo jej svrhnout do
plamenů Orodruiny.
2 Glum
Prsten v šedesátých letech 25. století Třetího věku nalezl hobit Déagol, kterého však posléze zabil
jeho příbuzný, Sméagol.
Déagol při rybolovu spadl do vody a na dně spatřil cosi blýskavého – uchopil to tedy, a když se
mu povedlo vyplavat, seznal, že se jedná o jednoduchý, avšak velice krásný prsten. Když tento nález
spatřil Sméagol, zatoužil po něm a začal se ho dožadovat jako dárku, neboť ten den měl narozeniny.
Poté, co mu Déagol odmítl prsten vydat, vrhl se na něj a zardousil ho. Poté dovedně ukryl tělo,
nasadil si prsten a vrátil se domů, kde zjistil, že ho nikdo nevidí. Když zjistil, že jej prsten zneviditelní,
začal jej zneužívat ke krádežím a různým zlomyslnostem, což vyústilo ve skutečnost, že ho neměl
nikdo rád ani v jeho viditelném stavu. Odcizil se tedy svým příbuzným, začal trpět samomluvou a
vydávat jakési kloktání znějící jako glum (gollum), pročež ho jeho rodina vyhnala.
Po vyhnání se potuloval krajem a živil se syrovými rybami, které lovil, sám jsa neviditelný.
Postupem času seznal, že nenávidí světlo, a podél bystřiny došel do jeskyně Mlžných hor, kde de
facto zmizel z povrchu zemského. V temnotě Mlžných hor žil o samotě, jen s Prstenem, kterému říkal
můj milášku, povídal si s ním a živil se rybami, případně skřety.
Glum, jak byl Sméagol zván kvůli svému klokotání, se vyjma vraždění nesetkal s živým tvorem,
dokud do jeho jeskyňky nezabloudil Bilbo Pytlík na své výpravě s trpaslíky k Osamělé hoře.Tato
skutečnost ovlivnila zásadním způsobem další dění ve Středozemi, neboť Bilbo při svém pádu do
temnoty narazil na Prsten, sebral ho a netuše, oč se jedná, umožnil Prstenu přiblížit se svému pánu.
3 Vliv Prstenu
Glumovu mysl Prsten ovlivnil již při prvním setkání, jinak nelze vysvětlit, že by svého přítele ihned
zavraždil. Zprvu vcelku neškodný hobit byl ovládán stále temnějšími myšlenkami. Z dnešního hlediska
by jeho stav bylo možné popsat jako schizofrenii. Glum mluví s Prstenem a k Prstenu, obává se ztráty
svého miláčka.
Jakkoli je Glum na první pohled záporná postava, nelze ho tak popsat. Nejpřesněji jej lze
definovat jakožto postavu tragickou. Okolnostmi, které sám nemohl dost dobře ovlivnit, se stal
vyvrhelem společnosti, opovrhovaným parazitem na životě. Prsten z něj dělá naprostou trosku,
přízrak, který nemá proč žít, nežije, jen přežívá, ničí vše kolem sebe a mumlá si.

3. Prsten je tedy jakýmsi spouštěčem duševní poruchy, iniciátorem naprostého úpadku osobnosti,
který nelze v realitě Pána prstenů zastavit. Glum přestává řádně vnímat okolní realitu, dokáže žít jen
ve tmě, kde nelze plně vnímat své okolí, zavírá se do svého fantaskního světa, kde je jen on, ryby a
jeho miláček, dáreček, jeho prstýnek. Jeho jediný smysl života, hnací motor jeho existence. Když
Prsten ztratí, nedokáže žít jako předtím, vydává se na cestu předurčenou k neúspěchu, neboť se snaží
nalézt nepolapitelné. Je na tom ještě hůř, než člověk, který nezná smysl svého života a jen tak
vegetuje, je na tom dokonce hůře než člověk, který ztratil, pro co žít. Glum se nemůže osvobodit ani
spácháním sebevraždy, neboť si bolestně uvědomuje, že jeho miláček na něj čeká, volá ho, ale on ho
za žádnou cenu nedokáže dosáhnout.
Na celém světě nemá jediného přítele, kromě Prstenu, i když je zajat – ať už služebníky Saurona či
Aragornem – a vyslýchán, nemluví ani tolik ke svým věznitelům, jako k Prstenu. Sice ví, že jeho
miláček se k němu nikdy nevrátí, tuší, že to on jej opustil, jenže se stále drží naděje, že ho na okamžik
spatří, že se ho dotkne a zase nebude nikdo, než jen oni dva, Glum a jeho pán.
Od objevení prstenu je jeho život utrpením, nejdříve ho opustí jeho vlastní zdravý rozum, pak
jeho rodina a přátelé a poté, co se naučí žít ve své nové situaci, přichází Bilbo, aby mu Prsten sebral.
Glum, maje silnou závislost na Prstenu, trpí silnými abstinenčními příznaky, jeho již tak dost špatný
mentální stav se dále zhoršuje a po prodělaném mučení, které nutně muselo přispět ke zhoršení jeho
už tak zlého fyzického stavu, přišla ona nejtěžší zkouška, kdy nemůže Prstenu dosáhnout, ani když je
v jeho naprosté blízkosti.
V okamžiku, kdy Glum konečně dosáhne Prstenu, který ukousne spolu s Frodovým prstem, je
vstrčen do Orodruiny, do plamenů sopky. Umíral tedy ve dvojí agonii, nemohl si užít už ani okamžik,
kdy by se potěšil nově nabytým vlastnictvím Prstenu – tedy v mukách psychických. Musel velice trpět
i fyzicky – jakkoli bolestivé je umírat v plamenech, Glum špatně snášel i svit slunce, vyšplhat na vrchol
sopky pro něj tudíž muselo znamenat naprosto nepředstavitelná muka, asi jako kdyby silný
arachnofobik hladil sklípkana, který by mu lezl po ruce.
