CHAPTER 08
THE QUESTION OF LIFE AND DEATH
What you think, you become
Lesson-01
Krishna explains to Arjuna the art of dying in this chapter.
WHAT HAPPENS TO US WHEN WE DIE?
Krishna says: Whatever thought we have at the time of
death, same status of life form one will attain in the next
life. In otherwords, whatever one thinks of at the time of
death, the same state is attained by him after leaving his
previous body. If one remembers Krishna at the time of
death, he goes back home, back to Godhead. If one does
not remember Krishna, he does not go back to Godhead.
Examples
Maharaja Bharata, although a great personality, thought
of a deer at the end of his life, and so in his next life he
was transferred into the body of a deer.
Vritrasura, a great devotee of the Lord, remembered the
Lord at the time of death. He fixed his mind in Samadhi
(trance) of remembering Krishna in his heart although he
was being attacked by his enemy. Thus after leaving
body, he immediately went back to Godhead and attained
Lord Krishnas service.
What to speak of devotees of the Lord, even those
soldiers, fighting on the battlefield of Kurukshetraon the
oppositeside, who happenedto see Lord Krishna while
leaving their body went back to Godhead. This is the
causeless mercy of Lord Krishna.
MORAL: If somehowor the other we can fixour mind on
Krishnaat the time of death, we will surelygo back to
Him.
