Presco, Inc., Woodbridge CT September 2015-Present
Presco is an engineering design firm specializing in electrical, software and mechanical
engineering. Markets include military, medical, and instrumentation products.
Vice President Engineering, Chief Technical Officer
Write and present proposals for client engineering projects. Manage project teams. Establish
and maintain relationships with clients. Develop, track, and report on project budgets, both fixed
costs and time and materials. Develop and document processes to achieve ISO-9001:2015 and
ISO-13485 certification (in process).
Smiths Detection, Danbury CT 2004-2015
Smiths Detection is a multi-national business with $800 Million in annual revenues. The
company designs and produces cargo scanning X-Ray systems and chemical and radiation
detectors for the homeland security market.
Director of Electrical and Systems Engineering
Led a team of as many as 17 permanent engineers and designers and many contract employees.
Oversaw a $6 Million annual product development budget. Used SAP to plan, track, and report
on project costs. Provided systems engineering for all development projects. Configured and
supported embedded operating systems.
ï‚· Introduced Stage-Gate product development process and a documented, formal
Engineering Change Notice procedure.
ï‚· Led team of employees at six development/manufacturing sites in five countries to define
and adopt Product Lifecycle Process for the business. Facilitated training on process to
teams in Germany, France, and USA.
ï‚· Defined and managed Value Analysis/Value Engineering (VAVE) program for Smiths
Detection. This program saved a documented $4.5 Million in its first 12 months.
ï‚· Sought out and acquired new technologies from other Smiths Detection sites and
instrument companies in the US, Canada, and UK. Merged several of these technologies
into a patented multi-dimensional chemical identifier.
ï‚· Responsible for major components of 7 new products providing a total annual revenue >
$45 million.
ï‚· Supported annual ISO:9001 and ISO:14000 audits as Engineering representative
SensIR Technologies, Danbury CT 2002-2004
SensIR Technologies was a privately held business with revenue of about $25 Million. SensIR
developed the first truly portable FTIR based chemical identifier. Note: SensIR Technologies
was purchased by Smiths Detection in 2004.
Director of Product Development
Led team of 13 mechanical, electrical, software, and optical engineers. Assigned resources,
managed Product Development schedules and budget. Acted as systems engineer for all
development projects. Hired engineers and contracted with outside software development team
to augment the direct employees. Met with customers and product managers to understand needs
and define product specifications. Trained and certified as HazMat Technician.
ï‚· Project Manager and Systems Engineer for three products based on FTIR Spectroscopy;
HazMatID, GasID, IlluminatIR 2. These three products have generated > $250 Million in
revenue.
Mettler-Toledo Autochem /ASI Applied Systems, Millersville, MD 1995-2002
Mettler-Toledo Autochem is a division of the Mettler-Toledo company. In 2002, Mettler-
Toledo’s revenues were $1.2 Billion. Autochem develops instrumentation to help chemists
understand the reactions they use to make products. Note: ASI Applied Systems was
purchased by Mettler Toledo in 1998.
Technical Director
Led team of 5 software engineers and 8 external mechanical and optical designers to create
Infrared Spectroscopy based reaction engineering instrumentation. Collaborated closely with a
sister company in Switzerland to create MultiMaxIR, a four-vessel automated reactor with
integrated FTIR monitoring. Managed outsourced development of flagship ReactIR software.
ASI Applied Systems, Norwalk CT 1991-1995
ASI Applied Systems was a privately held company with revenues of approximately $20
Million. It developed instruments and software for monitoring chemical reactions to improve
efficiency and yield in the pharmaceutical industry.
Manager, Software and Systems Integration
Managed and participated as part of team which developed ReactIR reaction engineering
software and hardware. Designed, constructed, installed and supported custom online infrared
systems for monitoring and controlling processes in pharmaceutical and consumer product
plants.
Spectra-Tech Inc., Stamford, CT 1987-1991
Spectra-Tech Inc. was a privately held company that produced accessories for infrared
spectrometers. In 1987 Spectra-Tech hired a number of employees from IBM Instruments to
expand its business into analytical instruments targeted at producers of consumer products
and pharmaceuticals.
Software Development Manager
Developed software and hardware for at-line and on-line infrared based analysis for
pharmaceutical and consumer product companies. Managed team of software developers.
Integrated combination of off the shelf and custom electronics to control spectrometer systems.
System engineering including electronics and thermal management for Spectra-Tech’s first
instrumentation products. Designed and integrated automated X-Y mapping stage for infrared
microscope.
IBM Instruments, Inc. San Jose CA and Danbury, CT 1983-1987
IBM Instruments was a division of IBM created to develop and market chromatographic and
spectroscopic instruments.
Senior Associate Engineer
Provided laboratory support, software development, systems engineering, manufacturing
engineering for Liquid Chromatography and Infrared Spectroscopy products.
ï‚· Developed suite of automated testing tools to ensure performance of finished HPLC
systems.
ï‚· Developed self-test software for IBM PC expansion card.
ï‚· Managed relationship with outside vendor who produced Liquid Chromatography
systems.
