Τον Οκτώβριο του 1980, ο Μαρκ Ντέιβιντ Τσάπμαν κατέφτασε από την
Χονολουλού στη Νέα Υόρκη. Σκοπός του ταξιδιού του ήταν να σκοτώσει τον
John Lennon. Ο Τσάπμαν, ψυχικά διαταραγμένο άτομο, θεωρούσε τον Lennon
υποκριτή και πίστευε πως μόνο εάν τον σκότωνε θα μπορούσε να βρει
πνευματική γαλήνη.
Παρέμεινε πέντε ημέρες στη Νέα Υόρκη και επισκέφθηκε το κτίριο Ντακότα
όπου διέμενε ο Lennon. Επάνω του είχε ένα περίστροφο, το οποίο ωστόσο
δεν ήταν εφοδιασμένο με σφαίρες. Στις 11 Νοεμβρίου, κάλεσε τη γυναίκα του
και της αποκάλυψε το σχέδιό του. Εκείνη, κατόρθωσε να τον μεταπείσει και
του πρότεινε να επιστρέψει στη Χονολουλού όπως και έγινε.
3. έξω από το κτίριο Ντακότα, ο John Lennon (ο οποίος
επέστρεφε μετά από την ηχογράφηση των τραγουδιών
Walking on Thin Ice και It Happened, που προορίζονταν για
τον επόμενο δίσκο του) και η Γιόκο Όνο κατευθύνονταν
προς το διαμέρισμά τους. Ο Τσάπμαν που τους
ακολουθούσε πυροβόλησε τον 40χρονο Lennon πέντε
φορές. Σύμφωνα με την αυτοψία, οι μισές σφαίρες

Εκείνος, αναφώνησε με
έκπληξη «με πυροβόλησαν».
Σύρθηκε έως το γραφείο της
ασφάλειας του κτιρίου και
κατέρρευσε.
Η αστυνομία έφτασε στον
τόπο του εγκλήματος έπειτα
από δύο λεπτά και το
ασθενοφόρο τριάντα
δευτερόλεπτα μετά. Ήταν
όμως πολύ αργά. Ώσπου να
μεταφερθεί στο νοσοκομείο, ο
John Lennon είχε αφήσει την
τελευταία του πνοή. Στις 10
Δεκεμβρίου, η σωρός του
αποτεφρώθηκε.
5. Η απολογία Τσάπμαν: «Πήρα μια φρικτή απόφαση, να
αφαιρέσω τη ζωή ενός άλλου ανθρώπου για να
