6. In Career Development We always start at what level am I? First, lets pre-assess our own skills, to really see what this is all about. Locating Information? Ready? Then we will look at KeyTrain, WorkKeys tests all about? And the NCRC? I will be gentle!...smile!

27. The Workforce Development Perspective: Adults, seeking retraining in your schools may have these WorkKeys scores.. The Dept of Energy and Labor Economic Growth issued a state policy in 2009 mandating the NCRC statewide in MI Works programs (No Worker Left Behind) The NCRC is designed to complement other traditional credentials such as a high school diploma, community college degree, or college degree While educational credentials mark the fulfillment of classroom learning experiencesThe NCRC confirms the individual competence in a specific set of workplace skills that employers have told us they need. 29. But Wait!!!! The Problem: IF we test them (WorkKeys) without teaching them , how will we build a sustainable, skilled workforce? Heres what we wrestled with statewide: Can we afford to test them and let them stay unskilled? Do we need to think proactive skill acceleration and not just reactive remediation ? Are we just adding another tool to our toolbox or are we looking at systemic change ? If we do what we have always done, will we get a different result? A key answer (pardon the pun)
30. Wait! What about skills gaps ? By comparing the job and individual profiles, the skills gap can be identified But what can we do about the gaps ? 3 4 3 4 3 4 5 5 6 3 4 Applied Mathematics 3 4 Reading for Information 3 4 Locating Information 5 Skills Gap Skills Gap Individual Job Profile

Editor's Notes
#16: 3 traits indicate an employees ability to do a job, and each reveals different employee qualities. > Many companies use personality and skill tests in the hiring process . > Personality: most difficult-to-change w/o psychotherapy > Moving up the pyramid, skills are more easily and directly trained - because foundational skills provide the basis upon which job-specific kills can be built. > FTR skills are the skills needed to some degree in every job - skills such as reading, writing & math. Effective employee development starts with selecting employees who have foundational skills that can be built upon . > Selecting employees based on both personality fit and skill-development potential results in a higher level of job performance, employee satisfaction, and organizational productivity. > Foundational skill are often overlooked in the selection process, mostly because businesses assume if an individual has a diploma or a certain set of courses on ones resume, that person has requisite skills. That is a dangerous assumption that can lead to expensive false-positive hires.
#23: This chart shows the relationship between certificate level and median annual salaries within the U.S., according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Its not difficult here to see the link between skills and prosperity.
