This study analyzed data from the PROGRESS-CTO registry to examine periprocedural mortality rates for patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) to treat a chronic total occlusion (CTO). The analysis found the 30-day mortality rate after CTO PCI was low at 0.4%, with most deaths occurring within the first 7 days. Advanced age, reduced kidney function, and failure to cross the CTO were associated with higher mortality. The results suggest CTO PCI can be performed with a low risk of periprocedural death.
