This document discusses research methods in architecture, including literature on different types of architectural research (research through design, research for design, research into design, design as research). It also examines experimental research methods. Experimental research aims to identify causal links and test theories through systematic manipulation and measurement of variables. Key steps include defining a problem, reviewing literature, formulating hypotheses, constructing an experiment design, and conducting the experiment through repeated trials. As a case study, the document discusses experimental research methods used at the Heydar Aliyev Centre, such as building small-scale mock-ups to test hypotheses.
This document provides a case study and analysis of the Gembira Residen building in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia based on the Green Building Index. It includes an introduction to the building and site context, as well as analysis of the site conditions, building layout, construction, and current performance related to roofing, walls, and openings. The document proposes several green building technology upgrades to the envelope and systems to improve energy efficiency, including renewable energy integration, green roofs, rainwater harvesting, and passive design strategies. The overall aim is to understand green building approaches in the local context and identify opportunities to enhance the sustainability of the existing building.
This document presents a case study on the PAM Centre office building in Malaysia. The study examines the effects of natural ventilation on the building in the tropical climate. Experimental research was conducted to measure temperature and relative humidity at different levels of the building on a cloudy day. The results showed that natural ventilation was more effective on higher floors where the temperature difference between interior and exterior was larger, promoting cross ventilation. Stack ventilation was also effective as relative humidity decreased on lower floors. A post-occupancy survey found that passive ventilation was efficient. As a result, the building received platinum rating from the Green Building Index and complied with ventilation standards.
This document outlines the key aspects of a proposed extreme sports center project in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It includes sections on the project objectives, goals and success criteria. Maintaining scope, time and cost are identified as the main factors for determining project success. Additional success criteria include achieving high quality, meeting organizational objectives and stakeholder satisfaction. The project aims to be completed within 18 months, on budget of RM7 million, and achieve Platinum GBI rating for environmental sustainability.
This document provides a comparative analysis of urban planning and social activity between Dashilar, Beijing and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman in Kuala Lumpur. It analyzes these areas based on Jan Gehl's framework of necessary, optional, and social activities. The narrow alleys and enclosed buildings of Dashilar support mostly necessary activities, while the wider walkways and open facades along Jalan TAR better enable optional and social activities, interactions, and public life.
The document summarizes three reaction papers by a student on architectural theory readings. The first discusses Learning from Las Vegas, noting how the book analyzes Las Vegas' emphasis on symbols over forms in architecture and urban planning. The second covers The Geometry of Feeling, which examines how architecture can arouse personal feelings and memories through sensory experiences. The third is on Towards a Critical Regionalism, which emphasizes achieving regional identity in architecture by incorporating local culture, nature, and tactile sensory qualities over visual elements.
This document is a research proposal that examines how the atmosphere and ambiance of a dining setting can impact the food experience. Specifically, it will investigate how interior design elements like color, lighting, and spatial arrangement affect a consumer's perception and enjoyment of food. The research will analyze these factors in both Malaysian restaurants as well as how certain foods seem to demand particular contextual settings. Through online research, on-site observations, and consumer surveys, the proposal aims to identify atmospheric patterns in Malaysian restaurants and determine which interior designs best enhance the dining experience.
This document provides lighting calculations and analyses for two spaces - a workshop and children's area - in a proposed community library project. For each space, it calculates the daylight factor and natural illumination based on window area and properties. It then proposes artificial lighting designs to supplement daylight, including fixture specifications and layouts to meet illumination standards. Diagrams show daylight distribution, artificial lighting plans and strategies to integrate both light sources through a PSALI system. The document demonstrates an understanding of integrating lighting principles into the library design to provide visual comfort for users.

This document provides a case study on the Wooi Residence designed by Architect Wooi. It investigates the passive cooling strategies used, which incorporate elements from traditional Malay houses. These include various types of openings like louvered doors and windows to maximize ventilation. The positioning of openings at different heights also allows for stack ventilation. Environmental factors such as building orientation and placement of vegetation were also considered. While natural ventilation strategies were prioritized, mechanical ventilation is used to supplement them given the hot humid climate. The passive designs aim to provide thermal comfort without air conditioning.

APM event hosted by the South Wales and West of England Network (SWWE Network)
Speaker: Aalok Sonawala
The SWWE Regional Network were very pleased to welcome Aalok Sonawala, Head of PMO, National Programmes, Rider Levett Bucknall on 26 February, to BAWA for our first face to face event of 2025. Aalok is a member of APMs Thames Valley Regional Network and also speaks to members of APMs PMO Interest Network, which aims to facilitate collaboration and learning, offer unbiased advice and guidance.
Tonight, Aalok planned to discuss the importance of a PMO within project-based organisations, the different types of PMO and their key elements, PMO governance and centres of excellence.
PMOs within an organisation can be centralised, hub and spoke with a central PMO with satellite PMOs globally, or embedded within projects. The appropriate structure will be determined by the specific business needs of the organisation. The PMO sits above PM delivery and the supply chain delivery teams.
