There is a trend of decreased sport
participation in the 9th and 10th grade
(Butcher et al., 2002)
 Studies have examined the barriers
youth face with sport participation (e.g.
Casper et at., 2011), however minimal
research looks at aspects of programs
that youth want.
This type of information addresses an
appeal for more scholarly research with
kids and sports participation (Messner
& Musto, 2014).

Introduction
Methods
 Worked with Hayward Promise
Neighborhood initiative in designing
survey and gaining entry with
participants
163 9th grade students at 2 Bay Area
high schools
Completed an online survey (~15 mins)
Used SPSS for descriptive statistics and
inferential (t-test, Chi-square) statistics
 Inductive analysis of open-ended
responses
Discussion
Our findings were consistent with the
literature as we found that fun and
enjoyment were the top reasons for
becoming or staying involved.
As we would expect, high participators
are more likely to get involved and
have a lower barrier score. However,
the influence of barriers was not as
significant as predicted.
The difference between the amount of
control that participators prefer may be
linked to the desired level of
competitiveness.
Family support seemed to play a role
between the high and low
participators.
Competence did not seem to be a
barrier contrary to our expectations.
Practical implications
Programs, schools and rec centers can
use this information by structuring
their program with a main focus on
fun and enjoyment. A supportive and
encouraging leader is preferred by
youth.
Future directions
Qualitative research to learn more in
depth about inclusive physical activity
programs and participants experience.
Continue to get feedback from youth in
the community to learn what they want
Giving back to the community by
presenting our results to the Hayward
Promise Neighborhood.
Role of Others
Commonalities:
 Social interaction
Teamwork and working towards a goal
 Value support from family
 Supportive and encouraging coach
Differences:
High participators prefer a friendly but strict
leader with more control (see table).
Low participators prefer a less controlling
coach.
Barriers
Results
We saw similarities and differences
between high and low participators in relation
to their dedication/commitment to their
preferred sport/PA and the role of others. We
analyzed open ended questions from the
survey as well as quantitative responses
Dedication/Commitment to
Sport/PA
Commonalities:
 Participate because they enjoy it
 Enjoy benefits of stress management
Differences:
High participators use PA and sport for
cross-training, stay involved because they
are good at them, and like to challenge
themselves and improve on their skills.
They desire a more competitive
environment (see table below)
Low participators are motivated by benefits
of improved self-image and health. They are
more likely to stay involved to decrease
laziness and boredom. They are worried
about staying committed because some
dont like working out. They are likely to
participate to try something new. They
prefer a less competitive program.
