Genetically modified foods are the topic of a graduation project presented by Yasmien Alaa El_Dien Abdul Aziz to the Food Quality & Control Program at Benha University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. The project is supervised by Dr. Reham Abdul Aziz Amin, an assistant professor of meat hygiene, and Dr. Rasha Al_Sabag, a lecturer of meat hygiene in the Food Control Department.

Transgenic animals are genetically engineered to contain extra genes. This seminar discusses methods for creating transgenic animals like microinjection, embryonic stem cell transfer, and nuclear transfer. Microinjection involves injecting foreign genes into fertilized eggs. Embryonic stem cell transfer modifies stem cells in culture before implanting in blastocysts. Nuclear transfer fuses donor cell nuclei with egg cells. Examples given include producing human proteins in cow's milk and human hemoglobin in pigs. This study aims to genotype plankton found in the guts of common Egyptian marine fish and their fry to determine which plankton are useful for feeding them. Researchers will extract metagenomic DNA from the gut contents of wild mullet, amplify the small subunit rRNA gene to fingerprint the microbial species present, perform denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis to separate the DNA, and then sequence and analyze the results to construct phylogenetic trees of the identified microbial species. This technique allows for a more complete profile of the fish gut microbiome compared to traditional microscopy methods.
