The new eighth grade math curriculum aligns with Common Core standards and will cover the following topics: formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations including modeling linear data and solving linear equations; grasping the concept of functions and using them to describe relationships; and analyzing two- and three-dimensional space using concepts like distance, angle, similarity, congruence, and the Pythagorean theorem. The document also provides information on homework, grading policies, class expectations, supplies needed, and test preparation for an eighth grade math class.

1. Common Core Math 8
The new eighth grade math curriculum aligns
itself with the Common Core standards. These
standards will include the following topics:
? Formulating and reasoning about
expressions and equations, including
modeling an association in bivariate data
with a linear equation, and solving linear
equations and systems of linear equations
? Grasping the concept of a function and
using functions to describe quantitative
relationships
? Analyzing two- and three-dimensional
space and figures using distance, angle,
similarity and congruence, and
understanding and applying the
Pythagorean Theorem

must come to practice!!!
Homework gives students a chance to practice the
concepts covered that day in class.
? HW at least 3 times a week
? 10% of your grade
? Late HW will be accepted for late credit.
A complete homework assignment =
all problems attempted + work
shown/thought process recorded for all
problems.

I tutor on Wednesday afternoons until 4:00. Peer
study groups are a great way to help others, reinforce
what you know, and get help also! You may also find
additional help on the Internet. I like the following
sites:

If you wish to seek a help outside of school, check with
Student Services for a list of tutors.
Grading Policies
Grades will be determined from a variety of summative
assessments that may include projects, quizzes, and
tests. Formative assessments will be used to monitor
student progress before giving summative assessments.
Major Assessments 45%
Minor Assessments 35%
Skills 10%
Homework 10%
Class Expectations
2. In this course, I expect you to be prepared to work
extra hard! This will require self-discipline!
Studying for this class is not optional. ? In order to
be successful, you must study. Be sure to take
good notes, ask for extra help, pay attention in class,
complete your homework, use online resources, form
study groups with other students, etc.
Welcome to the wonderful world of math!!
Edmodo & Absences
Edmodo is my main form of communication with parents.
On Edmodo, I will post a Syllabus for each unit that will
include¡
? Important due dates
? Assessment dates
? Daily CW & HW assignments
? Helpful Templates/documents
*The Syllabus serves as a guide only. All assignments are
subject to change.
It is a student¡¯s responsibility to turn in completed
assignments after any absence!
Daily Supplies
Students will need the following supplies every
day in algebra class this year:
1. Paper (loose-leaf & graph paper)
2. Pencils (sharpened with eraser)
3. Red pen & highlighters (at least 2 colors)
4. Three-ring notebook
For school & home use, I strongly recommend a
TI-84 or TI-83 Plus graphing calculator. A class
set is available for school use only.
Students are asked to donate one 4-
pack of AAA batteries. Thank you!!
Notebooks
An organized notebook = success in math class!
? Use your Assignment sheet!
? Keep up with your BW sheets!
? Number every page!!!
Many eighth grade students find studying for
math tests difficult because they have not had to
¡®study¡¯ in previous years to maintain an A/B
math average. Simply looking over already
completed problems is not studying for a math
test. Studying for tests and quizzes involves:
? reviewing/reworking formative assessments,
? reviewing properties and vocabulary,
? reworking sample problems (from scratch),
? completing additional problems not assigned
in class
Assessments must be completed within the
class period.
Do Corrections!!!
Students scoring below a 70% on major
assessments have the option to retake their
assessment to raise their score up to 70%.
Re-take Requirements: corrections on ALL unit
assessments, up-to-date on HW, spartan time
remediation, retakes will be given after school.
