Gregory Smith, PhD
Associate Vice President for Planning and Enrollment Management
Master of Ceremonies
Greg Smith earned his bachelors degree from the University of Colorado at
Boulder, then his masters degree and PhD in European and Russian History
at Stanford University. After teaching Western Civilization at Stanford, he
made the move to academic administration by becoming Associate Director
of Undergraduate Admissions at Stanford, followed by positions as Director
of Admissions and Vice President of Enrollment at Notre Dame de Namur
University and Menlo College. He has been Associate Vice President for
Planning and Enrollment Management at East Bay since 2007. He is most
proudofhisworktoexpandoutreachandenrollmentathislasttwoinstitutions
and here at CSUEB, as well as working on ways to improve the delivery of
student services at all stages of the enrollment process, from applying for
admissions through to graduation.
He serves on many boards and committees for such professional organizations
as the College Board and the National and Western Associations for College
Admission Counseling; his personal academic research interests are in the
comparative history of secondary education in the United States, Russia, and
Central Europe.

Patrick Devine
Distinguished Alumnus of the Year
Patrick Devine is currently the Senior Director of Global Incentive Compensa-
tion at Oracle Corporation. He emigrated from Ireland at the age of 18, and
after attending Chabot College part time, Patrick began his studies at Cal State
East Bay. He earned a BS in Business Administration in 1987 and an MBA in
1991. For the past eight years, Patrick has taught a Compensation Management
Course at CSUEB through the continuing education program.
At Oracle, one of the most successful software companies in the world, he is
responsible for the design and development of all Global Incentive Compensa-
tionprogramsandallofthecompensationactivitiesassociatedwithallmergers
and acquisitions. Previously, Patrick worked for Applied Materials and Seagate
Technology. He has worked extensively in China, Korea, Taiwan, and Europe
leading various human resources, finance, and compensation initiatives.
He also serves as Strategic Advisor to the Bishop of the Diocese of Oakland.
As a Finance Council member he was instrumental in getting the first Moodys
rating on a diocese in the United States and subsequently floating a $150
million bond to build the new cathedral in downtown Oakland.
Patrick says his proudest accomplishments are becoming an American citizen
and graduating from CSUEB. He and his wife of 28 years, Kathy, have three
daughters, Bridget, Meagan, and Katie, all of whom are attending California
State University colleges (San Luis Obispo, Sonoma, and East Bay respectively).
Robert Litton
Outstanding Young Alumnus of the Year
Robert Litton studied composition and percussion performance at Cal State
East Bay, receiving his undergraduate degree in 2001 and his masters in 2004.
Hewentontograduatefirstinhisclassfromtheprestigiousprogramforscoring
motion pictures and television at the University of Southern California.
He has performed with the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra, the
Marin Symphony, the Berkeley Symphony, Composers Inc., multiple musical
theatre productions, and was a marimba soloist with the Kensington and
Fremont Symphony Orchestras.
His compositions have been performed by members of the San Francisco
Symphony, San Francisco Opera, San Francisco Contemporary Music Players,
the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Los Angeles Opera, Los Angeles Chamber
Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. In 2001 he was honored with a
featured performance in New Yorks Carnegie Hall. Robert, commissioned by
CSUEB,alsocomposedInauguralFanfareinhonoroftheinaugurationofMo
Qayoumi as President of the University on June 1, 2007.
Now a film composer, Robert has scored award-winning films for up-and-
coming directors, including Love in the Summertime by Paul Wie, Geralds Last
Day by Justin and Shel Rasch, and Negotiations by Ethan Cushing, which was
selected to be part of the 2008 Cannes Film Festival.
