VIOPS07 WORKSHOP
Virtualized Infrastructures Workshop [07]
The volunteer training process
for Project Open Door has been
unorganized and impromptu, without
a planned calendar, explanation of
the layout of the program, guidelines,
responsibilities, and a social
approach to teaching high school
students. Due to these inadequacies,
a proper training process needs
to be implemented to make the
transition as a volunteer a smooth and enticing one.
This mission of the Peppers initiative is to improve Project Open
Door’s after school program through a coherent three-part volunteer
engagement process
This document summarizes key problems facing American education:
1) High teacher attrition rates, with nearly half of teachers leaving within 5 years, drain budgets and undermine student learning. Lack of support and preparation contribute to teachers leaving.
2) Low parental involvement in middle and high school hinders student achievement and motivation. Busy schedules, cultural factors, and negative school experiences prevent some parents from engaging.
3) Many students struggle to comprehend what they read despite able word reading. This can lead to dropping out, yet content teachers are called on to help boost reading performance across subjects. Addressing these issues is vital to ensuring educational excellence.
Web tools at work Official use of Social Media at the City of Salisbury.Rhys Moult
?
How the Local Government organisation, City of Salisbury in South Australia, is employing Social Media. The early stages of the official Social Media strategy and the policies involved.
British photographer Carl Warner creates landscape images called "foodscapes" using various food ingredients found in a typical kitchen. The foodscapes depict scenes like forests, beaches, and submarines made entirely from fruits, vegetables, cheeses, pastas, and breads. Warner spends hours arranging the food pieces on an 8ft by 4ft table to realistically portray three-dimensional landscapes. He takes the photos in stages to prevent the fresh foods from wilting. Warner hopes the foodscapes will promote healthy eating, especially for children.

The document discusses the evolution of the internet from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0 and defines key concepts of social media and how it has changed how knowledge is created and shared. It provides examples of common social media tools like blogs, social networking sites, RSS feeds, podcasts/vodcasts, widgets, and mashups. It argues that social media is important for connecting people, information and collaboration and is becoming essential for civic engagement and volunteering.
New Zealand has a population of 4.2 million people and covers an area of 103,738 square kilometers, while Japan has a population over 127 million people across 377,835 square kilometers of land. The document compares basic demographic and cultural facts between New Zealand and Japan such as their prime ministers, flags, and popular foods like sushi and fish and chips.
This document discusses using assistive technology to help students with autism. It describes using digital picture cues as visual aids for students who are visual learners, rely on adults, and learn sequentially. Data is presented showing that for one student named Matthew, using picture cues to prompt replacing a trash bag and taking it to the dumpster reduced the number of needed prompts from adults and increased his ability to complete steps independently.
The youth attending CityArts
come from Providence’s inner-city
communities where they lack access
to the beauty of our natural world.
The Art and Nature Studio aims
to bring nature to Providence
youth, beginning an essential bond
between our environment and the
arts. The studio, an engaging space
housing specimens from all walks of life, utilizes hands-on interaction,
investigation and participation to provide outlets for a range of learning
styles, talents and interests. It is an opportunity for the kids to learn from
their natural world, to develop an understanding of our living planet, and
to become life-long advocates for the environment.

Digital profiles in 2012. 10 tips for AITD presentation in AdelaideRhys Moult
?
This document provides 10 tips for developing an online profile in 2012. It recommends businesses create a web presence, use their own devices and technology of their own, get their business visible online, embrace technological changes, and seek endorsements from others to strengthen their online profile. The document is authored by Rhys Moult, an eBusiness Strategic Advisor for the City of Salisbury.

Dr. Glenn's Holistic Thinking Pyramid is a five-tier model for integrating different types of thinking. [1] It aims to explore why some people achieve more than others. [2] The pyramid's five levels progress from basic thinking using instincts to interpretive thinking that connects past, present and future abstract and concrete concepts. [3] As educational leaders, we must embrace holistic thinking to address societal problems by thinking beyond typical approaches.
This article discusses the dangers of the synthetic drug K2, also known as synthetic marijuana. K2 was created in the 1990s by chemist John Huffman as part of pharmaceutical research but has since been abused as a legal alternative to marijuana. While K2 mimics the effects of THC, the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, it is potentially more dangerous due to unknown toxins and a longer lasting high. The study assessed 246 college students' knowledge of and experiences with K2. Most students were unaware of K2 or its dangers, though a few reported trying it due to peer pressure. The authors recommend further research on the effectiveness of drug education programs and monitoring trends in K2 use over time as its legal status

This article summarizes research on the effects of labeling students as learning disabled. The author reviewed 34 studies from 1970 to 2000 that addressed the impact of the learning disabled label. Four key themes emerged from the literature: 1) Labels can influence the expectations, stereotypes and attitudes of teachers and peers towards students; 2) Labels may lead to stigmatization, rejection and social distance from others; 3) There is a disconnect between expressed attitudes towards labeled students and actual treatment of them; 4) The influence of a label depends on other salient information provided about the student. The author aims to synthesize both qualitative and quantitative research on this topic.

This document discusses OpenStreetMap (OSM) and the characteristics of a "NeoGeographer". Some key points:
- OSM is an open-source map of the world that anyone can edit or use. It aims to provide an alternative to proprietary map data from companies like Google Maps.
- A "NeoGeographer" is someone who contributes geospatial data to digital maps using modern tools, as opposed to traditional "Old Geographers" who worked in the past.
- OSM data is licensed under the Open Database License which allows for reuse and modification of the map data. In contrast, Google Maps does not allow for free secondary use or modification of its map content.
