In the days when the judges ruled, there was a
famine in the land. So a man from Bethlehem in
Judah, together with his wife and two sons, went to
live for a while in the country of Moab. 2 The mans
name was Elimelek, his wifes name was Naomi, and
the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Kilion.
They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem, Judah.
And they went to Moab and lived there.
Ruth 1: 1-3
Now Elimelek, Naomis husband, died, and she was
left with her two sons. 4 They married Moabite
women, one named Orpah and the other Ruth.
After they had lived there about ten years, 5 both
Mahlon and Kilion also died, and Naomi was left
without her two sons and her husband.
Ruth 1: 4-5

Editor's Notes

  • #2: Ruth is a story of hope and love, of rescue and redemption in the middle of hard times. How do you keep going when you are in a bad place? How do you get to a better place?
  • #3: So, lets start
  • #4: The events of the book of Ruth happened within the time period of OT Book called Judges. This period in history is bookended by two statements of decline, loss and disappointment.Ruth though, is a book of hope and rescue in the midst of hard times it is about love, friendship and redemption.
  • #5: This is a story primarily about three peopleNaomi, who seems to lose everythingRuth, an unexpected friend, who starts the story as an outsiderAnd Boaz a decent and kind man, though possibly a little dim though we get to that.God is a character here too though kindof in the background. His goodness is present, but you have to look for it.This is not a story of obviously mind blowing miracles and walking on water rather, it is a tale of the grace and love of God worked out in daily life. Which is where we all need to look for him and find him.
  • #6: Judges: bad times and good times followed by bad times again.Choices and consequences. When you ignore Gods direction for your life and his way of doing things it will go badly for you.Moab, a near neighbour, on the other side of the Jordan river an odd place to choose.Distant cousins, from the incestuous offspring of Lot and his daughters. Lot was Abrahams brother. They try to curse Israel during the time in the wildernessAnd actively go to war with Israel during the early chapters of Judges.
  • #7: They stay, because there is food. The boys intermarry (they shouldnt) tbere are no children even after 10 years. Both boys die. Its all gone wrong
  • #8: Moabites were distant cousins to the Israelites the offspring of Abrahams brother Lot.They were at war with Israel during this time and Ehud (the left handed Judge) sorts this out (Judges 3)
