This study examines how employees' perceptions of resource dependence from funding agencies affects their ability to fulfill their nonprofit organization's mission. The researcher interviewed current and former employees of a national volunteer agency to understand how decreased funding inhibited programming and mission fulfillment. The study found that changes in funding levels affected employees' perceptions of their ability to innovate, fulfill the organization's mission, and create new programming. Applying resource dependency theory, the findings suggest that nonprofits depend on external funders and the requirements of funders can influence the programs offered and organizational structures of recipient nonprofits.LANS2013_ProgramGuide

This thesis explores the moral character development of former students of a British democratic school called Sands. It aims to understand how their school experiences impacted their moral character development and ability to enact moral character in everyday life. Through in-depth interviews and a focus group, the researcher gathered narratives from former Sands students about their life journeys. The data showed that three key factors from their schooling enabled their moral character development and practice: having freedom to explore their identity, taking responsibility for their own lives, and becoming aware of choices in any situation. These factors were anchored in Sands' commitment to being a personal learning community with a democratic pedagogy of freedom. Social presence theory is a central concept in online learning. Hundreds of studies have investigated social presence and online learning. However, despite the continued interest in social presence and online learning, many questions remain about the nature and development of social presence. Part of this might be due to the fact that the majority of past research has focused on students' perceptions of social presence rather than on how students actually establish their social presence in online learning environments. Using the Community of Inquiry Framework, this study explores how social presence manifests in a fully asynchronous online course in order to help instructional designers and faculty understand how to intentionally design opportunities for students to establish and maintain their social presence. This study employs a mixed-methods approach using word count, content analysis, and constant-comparison analysis to examine threaded discussions in a totally online graduate education course. The results of this study suggest that social presence is more complicated than previously imagined and that situational variables such as group size, instructional task, and previous relationships might influence how social presence is established and maintained in threaded discussions in a fully online course.Erin Final Copy

- 3. 26 PHILANTHROPY AND NONPROFIT LEADERSHIP JESSICA SLADE From a young age Jessica has had an enthusiasm and interest for the field of global engagement. Jessica participated in her first international placement in Nicaragua at the age of 16, and quickly flourished as a leader- feeling a passion for working within multi-ethnic work teams. After winning a $5000 Youth Philanthropy Initiative grant for a grassroots charity in her community of Haliburton, Ontario, Jessica worked as a ranger for the Ministry of Natural Resources in the Ojibway First Nations reserve later on that year. It became evident that Jessicas next progression in life was to further her awareness of the world around her and to obtain a degree in global studies and international development. In her capacity as a full-time Honours Global Studies student at Wilfrid Laurier University, Jessica has shown a strong commitment for philanthropic efforts in Canada and aboard. She has participated in two international internships in Guatemala and Colombia; as well as completed the Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program at the Grand Valley Institute for Women in Waterloo. In her roles of volunteer coordinator, executive assistant and health and hygiene program developer, Jessica has gained valuable insight as to the impact an effectively managed organization can have on a community. Now focused on the managerial sector of development agencies, the Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership program at Carleton University is the necessary next step. Jessicas goal is to help create transparent structures of development through the formation of ethical policies and leadership efforts. Jessicas participation in the MPNL program will work to academically and professionally strengthen her competencies to shape a career of notable accomplishments in the coming years.
