A 2017 European heatwave caused by a long-lasting high pressure system is analyzed. The high pressure system led to hot, dry conditions over much of Europe. Effects included:
- Social impacts as the elderly and young children struggled with the heat in countries like France, Spain and Italy.
- Economic costs from reduced tourism and productivity in southern Europe.
- Environmental impacts like droughts and wildfires in Portugal, Spain and Greece.
- Responses included public cooling centers in cities, distributed water, and firefighting efforts across affected countries.

3. The 2017 European Heatwave: a long term
high pressure weather event
Today we are looking this event as an example of the effects a high pressure
weather system can bring. You have to create a spider diagram.
1. The causes of the heatwave. You will talk about anticyclones (high
pressures)and air masses.
2. The effects of the heatwave. As normal categorise this into social
economic and environmental. But also look at how different groups of
people were affected.
3. How people responded to the heatwave
4. Every time you mention an effect or a response, you need to locate the
country it happened in on your map
