Space hackers are exploring outer space using open source solutions, enabled by increased collaboration with space agencies, open data and software, and cheaper open source hardware. The NASA Space Apps Challenge is a global hackathon that uses open NASA data to crowdsource solutions to space-related problems. Space Apps NYC is a grassroots community of nearly 3,000 space hackers that has been holding hackathons since 2012 to support open source space initiatives.
