Mother's Day originated in ancient Greece where they honored Rhea, the mother of the gods Poseidon, Hades and Zeus. It later became a Catholic celebration honoring the Virgin Mary. In the United States in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day, which was then adopted by other countries. In Ecuador, Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May to pay homage to mothers. In Spain, Mother's Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of May and was influenced by the American tradition starting in the early 20th century.
