Nathan tells a parable to King David about a rich man stealing a poor man's lamb. When David angrily sentences the man to death, Nathan reveals that the story was about David, who had committed adultery with Bathsheba and arranged the death of her husband. Though God forgives David's sin, the child from David and Bathsheba's adulterous relationship dies as punishment. Later, Bathsheba gives birth to Solomon, whose name means "peaceful," showing that true repentance can restore one's relationship with God.

The Holy Spirits Somber
Sermon to King David
Text: 2Sam 12:5-6
Introduction: John 16:8
John 16:8
8 And when he [the Comforter] is come,
he will reprove the world
of sin, and
of righteousness, and
of judgment:
9 Of sin,
because they believe not on me;
10 Of righteousness,
because I go to my Father,
and ye see me no more;
2. 2
11 Of judgment,
because the prince of this world is judged.
David is enraged by a fairy tale that is about
him.
The rich man and the poor man, with one lamb.
As Nathan the prophet reaches the crescendo of
his story, David can hardly contain himself, as
he gives sentence on the heartless culprit in the
story.
2Sam 12:5-6
5 And David's anger was greatly kindled against
the man;
and he said to Nathan,
As the LORD liveth,
the man that hath done this thing shall surely
die:
6 And he shall restore the lamb fourfold,
3. 3
because he did this thing,
and because he had no pity.
I. The Edict- v6
he shall restore the lamb fourfold
Exod 22:1
1 If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and
kill it, or sell it; he shall restore five oxen
for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep.
The only way to deal with a thief is in the
extreme;
he has just proved his sense of equity is skewed
by selfishness.
His dishonesty enables him to evade guilt, and
regret compassion.
His first felony was the mental assassination of
God, knowing
4. 4
all things are naked and opened unto the eyes
of him with whom we have to do.
What, then, is to be done with such an one?
He must be made to feel the folly of his theft.
He must experience that his theft is a bad
investment.
A truly repentant man is willing to accept
the edict of the law.
Luke 19:8
8 And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the
Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I
give to the poor; and if I have taken any
thing from any man by false accusation, I
restore him fourfold.
2Sam 12:7
7 And Nathan said to David, Thou art the
man
5. 5
Often the scripture is very pointed when it
looks a man in the eyes and says thou art
the man
Unrighteous anger is murder
Matt 5:21-22 21 Ye have heard that it was said
by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and
whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the
judgment:
22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry
with his brother without a cause shall be in
danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall
say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of
the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool,
shall be in danger of hell fire.
Unrestrained lust is adultery
Matt 5:27-28 27 Ye have heard that it was said
by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit
adultery:
6. 6
28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh
on a woman to lust after her hath committed
adultery with her already in his heart.
Unlawful marriage is adultery
Matt 5:31-32 31 It hath been said, Whosoever
shall put away his wife, let him give her a
writing of divorcement:
32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put
away his wife, saving for the cause of
fornication, causeth her to commit adultery:
and whosoever shall marry her that is
divorced committeth adultery.
Sufferyourselves to be defrauded
Matt 5:38-39 38 Ye have heard that it hath
been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a
tooth:
39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil:
but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right
cheek, turn to him the other also.
7. 7
Mighty works of God ignored earn
destruction
Matt 11:20 Then began he to upbraid the cities
wherein most of his mighty works were done,
because they repented not:
Matt 11:22 But I say unto you, It shall be more
tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of
judgment, than for you.
Your advice given should also be your
standard
Matt 12:36-37 36 But I say unto you, That
every idle word that men shall speak, they shall
give account thereof in the day of judgment.
37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified,
and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
2Sam 12:6
6 And he shall restore the lamb fourfold,
because he did this thing, and because he had
no pity.
8. 8
II. The Exaggeration- v5
Four Sheep for a Sheep is a true verdict for the
man without pity but
2Sam 12:5
5 And David's anger was greatly kindled against
the man; and he said to Nathan, As the LORD
liveth,
the man that hath done this thing shall
surely die:
No rule is given for capital punishment against
this offence.
In our passage David has exalted an animal to
the status of a human, to declare capital
punishment, claiming the rich man had no pity.
But what about the rich man, did God not have
enough foresight to include this scenario the
law, if there was a need for it?
9. 9
It appears now David is the one without pity.
This is reminiscent of a time David was on the
receiving end of this type of anger.
Sauls Satanic insane rage
1Sam 20:31
31 For as long as the son of Jesse liveth
upon the ground, thou shalt not be
established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore
now send and fetch him unto me, for he
shall surely die.
(because Im the king and I dont like him,
so off with his head)
Because of the emotional connection between
the poor man and his pet, David personifies
and prioritizes an animal to the level of a
human (Ex 21:16).
When we begin to break Gods rules and
down grade his authority, it is not long till we
10. 10
attempt to rearrange the priorities of His
world.
III. The Effect- v13-14
2Sam 12:13-14
13 And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned
against the LORD. And Nathan said unto
David,
The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou
shalt not die.
14 Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast
given great occasion to the enemies of the
LORD to blaspheme,
the child also that is born unto thee shall
surely die.
(compare vs 5 shall surely die)
Gods forgiveness always comes with a
reminder of his Authority.
11. 11
(Shall surely die- signed by the one who
can enforce it. Go and sin no more)
Forgiveness is not acceptance of sin; the wages
of sin is still death.
However, humble repentance usually results in
mercy even if the effects of sin must still be
endured.
Ps 51:11-13
11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and
take not thy holy spirit from me.
12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and
uphold me with thy free spirit.
13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways;
and sinners shall be converted unto thee.
Isa 62:6 I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O
Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace
12. 12
day nor night: ye that make mention of the
LORD, keep not silence, KJV
Acts 18:9 Then spake the Lord to Paul in the
night by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak, and
hold not thy peace: KJV
Luke 4:35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying,
Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And
when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he
came out of him, and hurt him not. KJV
Conclusion:
When you have peace with God you will soon
find peace from God.
Following the death of the child in Nathans
prophecy we next see the birth of Solomon.
13. 13
2Sam 12:24-25
24 And David comforted Bathsheba his wife,
and went in unto her, and lay with her: and she
bare a son, and he called his name Solomon:
and the LORD loved him.
25 And he sent by the hand of Nathan the
prophet; and he called his name Jedidiah,
because of the LORD.
Solomon means- peaceful
Jedediah means- beloved of the LORD
John 16:7
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth;
It is expedient for you that I go away:
for if I go not away,
the Comforter will not come unto you;
but if I depart,
I will send him unto you.
14. 14
8 And when he [the Comforter] is come,
he will reprove the world of sin,
and of righteousness,
and of judgment:
