Fontos, hogy formázás nélkül nem használhatók a lemezek.

- 6. Nagy Attila 2018 FAT (32) A Windows 95 OSR2, a Windows 98 és a Windows Millennium Edition rendszer a FAT fájlrendszer egy újabb verzióját tartalmazza, melynek neve FAT32. A FAT32 fájlrendszer lehetővé teszi a mindössze 4 KB- os alapértelmezett szektorcsoportméretet, és támogatást nyújt a 2 GB-nál nagyobb kapacitású EIDE típusú merevlemezek használatához.

Nagy Attila 2018 NTFS Az NTFS vagy New Technology File System (új technológiájú fájlrendszer) a Microsoft Windows NT és utódainak (Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003) szabványos fájlrendszere. Jelenleg is ez használatos a a Windows rendszereken, habár számos átalakítás történt, amivel növelték a teljesítményét.
- 9. Nagy Attila 2018 NTFS A Microsoft korábbi FAT fájlrendszerét váltotta le, melyet az MS-DOS és a korábbi Windows verziók esetén használtak. Az NTFS több újdonsággal rendelkezik a FAT fájlrendszerrel szemben, mint például a metaadatok támogatása, fejlettebb adatstruktúrák támogatása a sebesség, a megbízhatóság és lemezterület-felhasználás érdekében, valamint már rendelkezik hozzáférésvédelmi listával (ACL) és megtalálható benne a naplózás is.
