STAYING ACTIVE
IN THE SUMMER

BEAT THE HEAT
Any medical professional will tell you that being physically
active is just as important as a balanced diet when it comes
to living a healthy lifestyle. Thats easier said than done,
though, when its too hot out to do much more than sit in the
shade with a tall glass of water. Here are some of the best
tips to get your heart rate up without overheating yourself.
SWITCH UP YOUR
SCHEDULE
Do you usually exercise at a specific
time? Consider switching to a different
timewithout the sun beating down on
you, youll be able to enjoy your workout
more thoroughly instead of wanting to
quit halfway through because its just
too hot. For the morning people,
consider setting your alarm a little
earlier than usual and start the day with
some yoga.油
SWITCH UP YOUR
SCHEDULE
If youre more of a night owl, check out
your local intramural teams that have a
night league. Depending on where you
live, there could be anything from
softball to kickball to running to
swimming, so explore your options! You
might even make a new friend or two
along the way.
Even a simple game of tag will get you
moving. Everyone knows tag is more fun
at night, anyway.
HEAD INDOORS
Theres no shame in taking your toughest workouts into the
air conditioning. If anything, it means you're mindful of
your body and what it needs to stay healthy. Run intervals
on the treadmill instead of a jog in the park, or put down
your tennis racket and exchange it for an indoor squash
court. Youll still get the benefit of a full workout but
without the sorry of getting a severe sunburn or heat rash.
HIT THE WATER
Its the summer, and you have one
of the best tools possible at your
disposalthe pool! Whether you opt
for laps, a water aerobics class, or a
high stakes game of Marco Polo, the
water will keep you refreshed while
you work up a sweat. Run through
the sprinkler or have a squirt gun
fight and embrace your inner child
again.油
You could even go to a water park
for the day and do an obstacle
course or swim in the wave pool. If
you have a family, this could be a
great option, since water parks have
activities for all age groups.
With any of these suggestions, youll
beat the heat and probably be having so
much fun that it wont even feel like a
workout.
