3D PRINTING IN PHARMACEUTICALAND MEDICAL
APPLICATIONS
ABSTRACT : The influence of additive manufacturing has grown significantly in recent years
because to the increasing need for personalized pharmaceuticals and medical equipment. One of the
most innovative and effective tools for tissue engineering, disease modelling, and precision production
of specifically created dosage forms is 3D printing. The most recent advancements include cell-based
materials for regenerative medicine, multifunctional drug delivery systems with accelerated release
characteristics, adjustable and personalized dosage forms, implants and phantoms that match a
patient's unique anatomy, and personalized and adjustable dosage forms.
INTRODUCTION : 3D Printing or additive manufacturing
is a process of making a three-dimensional solid object of
virtually any shape from a digital model. Successive layers
of material are laid down to construct a customized object.
Each layer can be seen as a thinly sliced horizontal cross-
section of the eventual object.
APLLICATION : Spritam is the first three dimensional
(3D) printed drug product approved by the FDA
Manufacture by Aprecia Pharmaceuticals. Spritam uses
ZipDose Technology platform, which produces a porous
formulation through 3D printing; this allows the formulation
to quickly disintegrate with a sip of liquid.
3D PRINTING METHODS :
Binder Jet Printing
Stereolithography
Selective Laser Sintering
Fuse Deposition Modelling
ADVANTAGES :
1. Occupy minimal space and are affordable.
2. Avoid Batch to Batch Variation seen in bulk
manufacturing dosage form.
3. Fast printing speed.
4.Reduced cost due to lesser wastage.
DISADVANTAGES :
1. Expensive laser systems.
2. Limited Selection of Materials.
3. During the processing stages, rough surfaces are
produced.
CONCLUSION :
3D printing has become a useful and potential tool for the
pharmaceutical sector, leading to personalized medicine
focused on the patients needs. 3D Printing technology is
emerging as a new horizon for advanced drug delivery with
built-in flexibility that is well suited for
personalized/customized medication. 3D Printing technology
will revolutionize the pharmaceutical manufacturing style
and formulation techniques.
