4-3 SOLVING
LINEAR SYSTEMS
BY ELIMINATION
HOW TO USE ELIMINATION
1. Look

for like terms
with opposite
coefficients.
2. If none, multiply one
or both equations by a
constant.
3. Add equations to
eliminate one variable.
Solve for the other.
4. Plug in solution to
solve for other
variable.

Example:
x + 3y = -2
x – 3y = 16
EXAMPLE 2
ï‚¢Solve:

-5x + 2y = 13
5x + y = -1
YOU TRY!
ï‚¢Solve:

2x – y = 9
4x + y = 21
EXAMPLE 3
ï‚¢Solve:

-6x + 5y = 25
-2x – 4y = 14
YOU TRY!
ï‚¢Solve:

3x + y = 11
6x + 3y = 24
