The Northwest region of Canada was not originally part of the Province of Canada or Dominion of Canada. It was occupied by First Nations peoples and fur traders from the Hudson's Bay Company and Northwest Company. The Hudson's Bay Company had been granted trading rights to Rupert's Land, an area encompassing 1/3 of modern Canada, including the Northwest region. Both companies built trading posts and encouraged Indigenous trappers to bring furs for trade, with the Northwest Company shipping furs from Montreal and the Hudson's Bay Company shipping from ports on Hudson Bay. First Nations peoples played a key role in the fur trade by hunting and trapping animals for their pelts and trading at the company posts.
In 1825, Canada consisted of 6 British colonies in North America: Upper Canada, Lower Canada, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland. These colonies relied on Britain for laws, defense, trade, and sending immigrants. The Hudson's Bay Company controlled Rupert's Land near Hudson Bay and the North-Western Territory. After the War of 1812 between Britain and the United States, many American Loyalists moved to Canada to remain under British rule. Farming and the fur trade were important economic activities, though there was little infrastructure beyond waterways.

The document provides an overview of the native peoples of the Northwest and their interactions with European traders. It discusses how the natives had established trading networks prior to European contact that they then used to trade furs. As European fur traders pushed further inland, many began spending winters living with local native families and often intermarried with native women. This led to the emergence of the Métis people, who developed their own distinct culture blending European and native traditions. By 1810, many Métis had settled in the Red River Valley, where they established family farms and participated in the seasonal bison hunt.
This document discusses preservation, conservation, and data curation of historical documents. It provides examples of different types of historical documents like illuminated manuscripts, incunables, and photographs. It then discusses the various threats documents face like water and mold damage, ink corrosion, and vinegar syndrome in microfilms. The document outlines methods for preservation like deacidification processes and disaster preparedness. It also discusses conservation and restoration techniques with the goals of securing the text, respecting the originality and historical traces, and using reversible methods. Case studies of flood damage and fires are presented along with before and after photos of restoration projects.

The Metis people in western Canada saw their traditional way of life threatened by incoming settlers and the division of land into plots. Led by Gabriel Dumont and Louis Riel, who returned from exile at Dumont's request, the Metis petitioned the government to recognize their rights and create a homeland but were ignored. When negotiations failed, violence broke out between the Metis and North-West Mounted Police at Duck Lake, and later between Metis and Canadian militia at Batoche, where the Metis were ultimately defeated despite holding out for three days against overwhelming odds. Riel was captured and later hanged for treason, marking the end of the Northwest Rebellion of 1885.

Canadians vote approximately every 4 years for a federal election when the ruling party has a majority, or every 2 years for a minority government. An election must be called within 5 years of a party taking power. A party forms a majority government if it wins over half the seats plus 1. If no party wins a majority, the party with the most seats forms a minority government that must seek support from other parties. The document provides several examples of hypothetical election results and determines whether they would result in a majority or minority government.
