Maria Gaetana Agnesi was an Italian mathematician, linguist, and philosopher born in 1718 in Milan. She wrote the first book containing an integral and differential account and was an honorary member of the Bologna University. At age 9, she delivered a 1-hour speech in Latin at an academic gathering on women's right to education. By age 15, she led philosophical discussions with Bologna's most educated citizens. She is most known for describing the "Witch of Agnesi" curve in her textbook, which became its name due to a translator's mistake. The surface area under the curve is a2 and four times the area of a diameter circle.
