5-Fluorouracil is converted inside cells to 5-fluro-deoxyuridine monophosphate which inhibits thymidylate synthase and disrupts DNA synthesis. A 2-year-old male was admitted to the hospital with non-metastatic hepatoblastoma and underwent CT scanning showing mild hepatomegaly and a patent portal vein. Due to bone marrow suppression from treatment, the patient experienced neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
